4* or higher Varadero AI's closer to Varadero | Debbie's Caribbean Resort Reviews Forums

Looking for information on Varadero area.Going around Feb. 11th for 7days, looking for an 24hr AI resort that’s closer to the town of Varadero, either within walking distance or that has a free shuttle to Varadero daily. We were there before and were at what is now called Memories Varadero…which is at the far end and not even sure how far from Varadero it actually was…can someone give some suggestions?

Also looking to see if there’s any eco type tours in that area to go to…

Arenas Blancas is right at the beginning of Varadero. Never been there though.Memories is impossible to walk into town from since you would have to walk on the highway. It’s a good 20+ minutes bus ride.I walked from Breezes Bella Costa and it was about half an hour. That’s the last resort before the golf and therefore the furthest you can walk to from Varadero city.

Iberostar Tainos is a very good 4*, close to town and the Delphinarium. To my knowledge, there are no "free shuttles" in Varadero, but the double-decker is close at 5CUC for a ticket good all day, hop on/hop off, from early morning on the main road. Good for sight-seeing and it takes you right downtown to the markets (calles 62, 51, Beatles cafe, etc.) There is a person on the bus who shouts out each stop so you know at all times where you are.
Melia Las Antillas also close to town and also 4*, although never been.

I liked Barcelo Solymar. It was nice resort with good food, nice beach and walking distance to the center of Varadero.

We have stayed at the Barcelo Solymar four times and really enjoyed each stay. However, the resort is in need of major renovations/upgrades to the main hotel and bungalows. We chose to stay at the Iberostar Tainos in 2015.

I guess sea and time does its own thing and renovation is needed. I hope they will fix Barcelo Solymar to be the way it was as location is perfect.
Why would Varadero fix any resort? Why would any resort fix itself? Veradero is sold as a destination with variable prices from "almost awful" near the canal to "Must be perfect" at the far end. Given the way resorts are rated, one of the ones in the middle, say, like Tuxpan, could hang on forever without doing anything except safety upgrades. Ever.

OK, that’s what they’ve done but…

I have seen many resorts close for renovation in Varadero. Sometimes it could be simple paint job as in tropical countries paint doesn’t stick to the walls and painting is needed every few years. Other resorts in Varadero would close swimming pool for renovation for example. I am not sure what is wrong now with Barcelo Solymar but when I was there it was very nice hotel and had perfect settings.
