eeeefarm got me to thinking. Our once favourite was the Cojimar in Cayo Coco. In the last 3-4 years, it has had so many names that if I didn’t see Cojimar in the name, I would continue looking. I know management changes over the years. How many do you know of? I know others but I’ll keep them to myself so I can see what others think! Not to mention that we needed a new topic. Thank you eeeefarm.

On Cayo Largo, the Playa Blanca started as a Barcelo brand, then reverted to the owners, Gran Caribe and is now branded an Iberostar Ole. Pellicano was Gran Caribe then leased to Sol and the Gran Caribe properties, Eden Village and almost everything else along the strip between Playa Blanca and Pellicano are exclusive to Italian tour operators like Gruppo Alpitour under leases like Bravo.

The HUSA on Cayo Santa Maria has become the Gaviota La Estrella Resort.

Many moons ago, Brisas Sierra Mar & Los Galeones were part of the Delta chain. You can still see remnants of the signs. How they got those signs up on the high mountains, I will never know. That sorta explains why the signs are still there, no one wants to climb up and take them down.

El Senador has changed hands and names several times. Again, I haven’t kept up.

Other name changes in the area, the current Memories Holguin was latterly Riu Playa Turquesa, before that Sirenis Playa Turquesa and originally the Occidental Grand Playa Turquesa.

Now I’m going to have to think of another one. Good job, eeeefarm.

Oh: I forgot Bellagio’s post. Varadero had a RIU Turquesa. It underwent multiple changes and I believe it’s now called Be Live Turquesa.

The Barcelo Marina Palace is now the Blau Marina. The Barcelo Cayo Libertad is now the Blau Privilege Cayo Libertad.

Not exactly a rink, more like an outdoor cement pad, but I remember playing hockey on it and the Cubans played the Canadians. They didn’t know much about hockey but they sure knew how to rough it up.

I think El Senador has changed names about 4 times and I’m pretty sure it has split in half and is now two resorts.That was one heck of a resort at one time. I went there three times and absolutely loved the beach

We were at the El Senador in 2010, (it was the NH Krystal)  it was split in two sides the Laguna, and the Emperador. The Emperador side is closed for ‘renovations’, for some time. The rink was a bit more than a concrete pad when we were there, it had ‘rink boards’ that were high at the ends and low on the sides, just like a ball hockey rink.

The last time I was in Cayo Coco they were just starting to pour the cement for the buildings for the new "El Senador".

Cojimar is now the Gran Caribe Club Cayo Guillermo……The Blau is now the Colonial Cayo Coco

The Colonial Cayo Coco was originally part of Club Tryp Cayo Coco and it operated as one resort when we were there in 2000 & 2001, the Colonial side and the Club side with access to both.

I think she likely means she hasn’t been to Cayo Coco in a long time!

THAT being said, I’d still like to get to the Hotel Formerly Known as The Allegro Cayo Guillermo.

desmei. the former Allegro Cayo Guillermo is now the Gran Caribe Club Guillermo. It is always the lowest price flying out of Toronto….some weeks you can get it for $600 including tax.

Desmai: We’ve been to the Cojimar about 15 times. It is about 200 rooms spread over a lot of land. About a half hour or so from Cayo Coco airport. We haven’t stayed there for about 3-4 years because we discovered Chivirico and Los Galeones. But the Cojimar was wonderful until we needed a change. Try it, I think you’ll like it.

I think the resorts in Cayo Santa Maria have undergone many name changes in the few years they have been open. I can’t be bothered to look into all the changes myself, but I’m hoping someone on here could spare the time!!
