American Money in Cuba?? | Debbie's Caribbean Resort Reviews Forums

My TA (travel agent) tells me that since the canadian dollar is higher than the american dollar, that it’s a good time to exchange our canadian money to american money for our trip to Cuba in April… I tought we couldn’t use American Money in Cuba?? Is there something wrong with my TA for suggesting that??
I’m pretty sure that we cannot use American Money down there. But I have heard that they like it, but of course because it is worth more than their money. However, I didn’t didn’t think you could use American money in Cuba. Let’s see what everyone else thinks.
Karmadoc is right. DO NOT BRING U.S. dollars to Cuba. Go to the Cuba board thread, you’ll learn all about the currency from posters who are in the Cuba regularly. Please checke the links Karmadoc posted too, they’ll clarify the situation. Take Canadian cash or your credit card NOT drawn from an American bank (no Amex, nor citibank etc). Cheers,

Lisa

I emailed Belkis about bringing american money to Cuba and she said they accept it…. Since the canadian dollar is higher… it might be a good idea since we get more money…. American credit cards are not accepted because the American banks won’t accepte a transaction from Cuba, but cubans will accept the money… Just thought I’d let you know…

From everything I’ve read, you will be penalized highly on the U.S. exchange. I’m putting my wedding on my credit card.L

You need to go to the Cuba forum and check out the money threads. This subject has come up numerous times, mainly because of misinformation from TAs. Your TA is years out of date on the validity of taking US$ to Cuba. Take Canadian $ (or, if from Europe, the Euro, Britain, Pound Sterling, etc). You will be penalized taking US$ and converting them to CUC.

Once again, I urge you to check on the Cuba forum regarding any questions about money.

Steffiej, Belkis is the wedding coordinator at the Iberostar, Varadero. I’m surprised she would advise someone that it is okay to pay in U.S. Anyway, something else to be aware of, each time you convert your money into a different currency, you lose a little (because of fees involved). It is always best to do one currency exchange if you can. Best,

L
