Continental Plaza Resort – Cancun T. Casey

November 2004

I just returned from the above hotel. I was there for one week. It was amazing. The transformation of this hotel from the Continental Villas Plaza is gorgeous. I stayed in a junior suite on the hotel side near the pool. The activities and the restaurants were all excellent. The room was beautifully decorated and immaculately clean. The cleaning staff bent over backwards to keep everything spotlessly clean. There was even a turn down service.

The shampoos and towels were ample and replaced daily. I was there for my birthday and celebrated in the restaurants The Italian Restaurant had excellent food and great desserts. The other restaurant was a little less formal but you could order from the menu or the buffet. With an all inclusive, both were available Alcoholic beverages in the restaurant were served with dinner and were great. I had a Mexican coffee drink at the Italian Restaurant You need to try it. While I was there for my birthday, I got to sing along with the pianist in the Italian Restaurant. Another couple was celebrating their anniversary and they sang along. It was great.

There is still construction going on at the villas and condo sides of the resorts. The construction was off the beach side and the workers covered everything up so you could not see the work going on. Since I was interested in seeing what they were doing, I stopped to speak with the architect to discuss the work ethics of the crew. I was amazed at how hard these guys work and for so little money. Their work was excellent and I am sure when they are completed, the resort will be magnificent. I hope the villas and the condos get the same level of renovations as the hotel. We had an excellent vacation and I have nothing to say other than the hotel is beautiful, the staff, including Enrique Velasco, were so accommodating and helpful throughout the entire stay. I have traveled extensively and absolutely love Cancun and the New Caribe Real. I plan to return within a few months and I am sure that I will find more improvements and and even better hotel.

February 2004

We stayed at the Continental Plaza Cancun with Go Travel Direct in February 2004. We had one night of rain (for 10 minutes) other than that, great weather and awesome spot to stay. The food was good, the rooms very clean and the drinks plentiful. Great shopping and excursions available from the hotel. You can take the very safe bus system to the downtown area for only 6 pesos (60 cents) each way. The souvenir shop in the hotel, closest to the elevators, had the best prices if you did not want to barter at the flea market downtown. The beds are on the hard side but the sounds of the ocean made you forget about that.

The food was good and the restaurants served made to order omelettes and waffles each day along with fresh fruit. We did not try the Italian restaurant but the steaks are quite small and thin at the Steak House Restaurant (used to Canadian beef). The lobby bar always had a band playing in the evening and there were theme nights in the theatre each night.

Overall an enjoyable experience and would recommend it to those thinking of going to Cancun.

What a wonderful vacation we just had! The ocean the food the accommodations were excellent! We are a family of 5-My husband, myself a 22 year old a 16 year old and a 14 year old. We had 2 separate rooms. They could not put the kids right next to us but at there ages it was o.k. Their room was in eyeshot of our room. We were given a up-grade without even asking? My husband and I went from a standard room to an ocean front villa!!! Not to shabby. We have been to 8 All-Inclusive all over and this was diffidently one of the best and the absolute best bang for our buck. When we go on vacation we do next to nothing. There was plenty to do very close to the hotel if you wanted. We opted to just enjoy the sun and sand. The service was excellent and the drinks were little watered down. You can ask for a stronger drink with no problems. If you go here is little advice. Take and use allot of sunscreen. Take along a thermal type drink holder. Less trips to the bar:) The Italian rest. requires long pants on the men. We women wore sundresses. It is a very casual place. It is sooooo clean. It is so sweltering hot in mid-afternoon we learned quickly to do things earlier in the morning and after 4:00pm. I am sure you will be more than pleased with the Contential Plaza. I would go back in a min. But we are on a mission to try someplace new every year. I am a person who researches a place to death before we go. I always seem to get buyers regret right after booking a trip. This place got some bad reviews?? I can tell you. Go Have fun! You will not be disappointed.

January 2003

My family and I stayed at the continental plaza in cancun. A two star hotel at best. The food menu never changed and dinner was worst of all. As for the musty odor in the roooms, this is very true. The best recommendation i have is to bring candles and anti-mildew lysol. The AC unit is in the hall to the bathroom and this is where you lift the wood panel and spray the air dispersing section. Also leave the candle lit under that section while in the room. The drinks were very good but the bars were only open one at a time ( the pool bar from strictly 10am to 5 then the lobby bar opened at 5). The best advice for the food is to get a pass for the La Sienna hotel (sister hotel approx 1/4 mile away) which had great food with a lot of selections. We spent whole days there. The snorkeling equipment at the continental is not included but at la sienna it is. A cheap old hotel which is what you get. The beds are very uncofortable, a mattress on boards on a concrete frame. Decline the hotel safe at check-in. You just hit the clear button and then enter new code to use it(i recommend trying this with no valuables in it at first til you get used to it). Do not use gogo tours. They are never at the hotel and the bill was not paid by several other people at the hotel. If you bring your cell phone, make sure you call your carrier to get at least one week of internatiopnal calling.

My sister and I recently visited Cancun (April 21st – 28th ). We went through Apple Vacations, All Inclusive out of Hartford, CT. We stayed at the Continental Plaza. This hotel has two sections, a villa part and a tower part. We were in the tower part. We arrived Sunday evening and checked in right away. Our room was on the second floor, oceanfront. The waves crashed underneath our balcony. It was beautiful. The only problem was the very strong musty, mildew smell. The A/C hadn’t been on so we figured that was why. We waited until the morning to see if the A/C would cool the room and the smell would go away. It didn’t and the A/C never properly worked. After 2 days the A/C system was leaking water from the ceiling and it never cooled the room.

We asked to switch rooms and we were given a room on the 6th floor. A nice room on the side of the hotel with a view of the ocean and lagoon. We decided to switch rooms even though we would loose such a great oceanfront room. The new room’s A/C worked perfect and the room was more updated with nicer furniture. It just felt cleaner. The rooms are a nice size with a sitting area – almost like a sunken living room and a vanity area with sink, hair dryer. Big bathroom with tub, shower and a huge closet with a safe ($2.75 per day.)

The weather was beautiful all week, not one drop of rain. The beach on this property is closer to the villa section. So you have to walk down that way. We didn’t realize how large the villa section was. The lobby was nice and lead to the larger pool with views of the ocean. It was very nice and there were two more pools in the villa section and near the tower – more quite. No swim up bars – but there were waiters who walked around taking drink orders on the beach and around the pools. The drinks were very good with lots of alcohol.

The food was decent. Breakfast offered french toast, pancakes, made to order omelet’s, fresh fruit, etc. Lunchtime offered a buffet or sit down meal at the restaurant. There wasn’t a lot of variety. We pretty much ate Cheeseburgers, fries, and chicken all week. The Italian Restaurant (La Trattoria) was good with more selection. It is the only restaurant you have to make reservations at. Breakfast was the best meal of the day. There are so many places to eat in Cancun if you get tired of the hotel food. We ordered room service a few times and they were prompt – but again not a huge menu selection.

This hotel is listed as a 4 star and sometimes as a 5 star. I would rate it a 3 star just because the food was mediocre and the beds were very uncomfortable. I ended up sleeping on the couch that last few nights because I couldn’t deal with the discomfort. The sheets were not soft and the pillows were like rocks. The mildew smell was also still around. It wasn’t as bad as our first room. Our clothes started to smell from the drawers and closet. We dealt with it and tried to make the best of it. We weren’t in the worst hotel but expected more. The staff was great and very helpful and most spoke English.

Cancun was awesome. The clubs, bars, and shopping left us with stuff to do all the time. This was our first time in Cancun and we would go back again – Just not to this hotel. We would like something nicer – but we did get what we paid for and were satisfied with the Continental. It is in a great location – walking distance to shopping, restaurants and right on the ocean. We used the buses a lot to get around – 6 pesos to ride. There is a stop right in front of the hotel. We hope this review helps. To sum it up – the hotel is not the best, but not the worst, we didn’t get sick from the food and we were in paradise. Overall I would call that a great vacation.
