CBC & gov't stats on tourist assaults & murders | Debbie's Caribbean Resort Reviews Forums

VERY interesting article in the CBC today on statistics per country on assaults and murders of Canadian tourists in all foreign countries. Scroll down a bit and view the chart, it’s in alpha order.Certainly proves that the media has made a huge deal in the Mexico deaths compared to other countries. I wish they had added stats for deaths on cruise ships, regardless of the country. I suspect most of those ‘disappearances’ are also murder but until they have surveillance cameras on the sides, we’ll never know.I’m not saying that you should go to Mazatlan today and wander the back alleys but stats bring reality to a media frenzy that is skewed.

For those of you who are too lazy to look, the worst places for violence on Canadian tourists per 100K tourists are: China, Jamaica, Mexico, Japan, Australia – in that order.

You can take any stats and turn them into any form of info you want to derive out of them. They are meaningless when people just say they will not go to Mexico. I have been to Mexico so many times that I can`t remember anymore. I have had a bank try to scam me, I have had several timeshare sales people harass me to the point that I told them to f off. I have had guys try to sell me drugs on and off the resorts. I personally know the scams of the police, custom officers, lawyers, hospitals and resorts. I have had to deal with many of their games. As much as I defend going to Mexico thing, I too shake my head in disbelief that people get caught up in these violent situations. I witnessed an assault on a tourist in Jan in Bucerias. I called the police.

I believe the Calgary women placed herself in her situation, because she was just down right stupid. Yet this story or lack there of, seems to place the Mexico tourism in jeopardy. Its sad that people fear going out side the resort to see what Mexico is all about. If you go to other countries like Jamaica and do not leave the resort, you might as well go to the West Edm mall get a theme room and sit by the pool!

They do not lie, but they can certainly twist the truth. Example, a place of two residents. One neighbour goes over and assaults the other. The victim then goes over to the other and murders him or her. Based on the facts you will for sure be victimized because of the 100% crime rate. Need I say any more. Oh, I know, do not go to this quiet little place as you may end up dead. I do not gamble and would like my chances to be involved in a crime to be near zero, not just a little less than some where else. The odds of being struck by lightning would be good or bit by a shark.

I’m not following your logic. These stats are on Canadian citizens being assaulted in a foreign country. The only thing that would change things slightly is that most tourists that go to Cuba, DR, etc, tend to stay in the resort compound while those in China, for example, are touring the countryside which is more prone to risk.Bottom line is that you must always be careful anywhere and many people let their guard down when on holidays.
Hey Dax,I agree with you. Always be aware of your surroundings. We always take extra precautions while on Vacation anywhere. Not only in the Caribean also in different areas of Canada as well as the United States. Even on a resort or on Disney properties. I don’t know how many clients have this misconception that Disney is 100% safe for your children to roam on their own. Wow! That would not be an option in our group.Enjoy your trip everyone who is going.

Happy Travels!

Stats are so much different than facts. For example, the murders in Canada, where did they occur? What type of homicide and location? You have a higher rate solving a murder between people who know each other than the drive by or rob a stranger and murder them situation. So whats your point, get murdered in Mexico where they will or don’t care to solve it and hang some poor little sap out to dry making a confession or get murdered in Canada and its a 80% chance they will catch the murderer. Who cares your dead anyway. In Mexico most murders these days are drug related and that means the heads that are dropped off at the bar mean some one else has just been eliminated from the criminal element. Is there a need to solve it? The police down there certainly do not want to bring these guys to justice. Look how many police have been killed there because they want to make a difference. You just can’t compare Canada to Mexico. You need to compare as they say apples to apples.

It has reached the point that many retailers are closing their doors. The economy in Mexico is in the toilet. I strongly disagree with that feeling you can get a great deal on the backs of the Mexican people. I tipped the restaurants 30% or more on all of our meals. Several times the place had more staff than patrons. The streets are quiet and everything was for sale or rent. That is so sad to see and experience. I love mexico. Many of the people who decide to not go to Mexico rely on dumb ass situations like the beating in a hotel situation. They just brand all Mexico as be a dangerous place to go. That is so unfair and the media’s fault in many cases.

we were there in Jan/Feb of this year and every place we went things were just as busy if not busier than any other year we have been….and as far a getting a deal on the back of the Mexicans….places are closing everywhere. Do you feel sorry for the Canadian who lost his good paying job because the plant he worked at for 20 years has closed and moved to Mexico? He is the person who took his family to Mexico for a vacation.

You loose your job and go on a vacation? I do not know where you were but I was in Cabo for a month and Bucerias for a month also. The hotels are running some of them at 40% to 50% capacity. Booked the Barcelo one day as we drove by. Just thought a mini vacation within one would be great. The rates and occupancy were way down. I don’t really barter anymore. Its nice to give these people a break. There is only some Mexican stuff I want to by any more, I probably have it all by now. Looked at a condo for sale that the previous listing was $630,000 and now was selling for $260,000.
The next season will be interesting as tour companies start curtailing their packages and flights. The cruise ships already don’t go to certain places. Its all very sad.

Its all very sad. wow….who said I lost my job? $260000 for a condo still not too bad . How many regular Mexicans have condos in thhe price range ?? How about the homes in Florida? Home that were $250,000 can now be had for under $100,000, sometimes as low as $50,000, these are homes that belonged to middle class Americans. ( and no I don’t own a home in Florida) My point is it is happening everywhere…and will continue to happen as long as we allow the good paying jobs to be moved out of Canada and the USA to Mexico and China. The rich will get richer and the middle class, the ones who take their families on vacations will vanish. I will continue to spend my hard earned vacation $$ where I can get the best deal and tip according to the service I get (just like at home)

Forgot to add, we were in the Mayan

All of this because I posted real statistics?????I don’t know any economy that is thriving right now. There are a lot of people unemployed everywhere and that is not about to change soon. Tourism is a huge benefit to most economies and tourism largely supports the lower income workers who clean your room, cook your meals, drive you to the airport, etc. I may be the only one on this forum but I do not spend time feeling sorry for workers at resorts. I tip fairly and I know that if it weren’t for people like us, they would be unemployed.

I have no problem buying condos or anything else that is priced lower in a failing economy. I’ve spend many hours searching for a retirement home in the south but so far, can’t find anything that comes even remotely close to what I live in right now.
