For many if not most of us, Christmas is a special time of year, a time of worship and celebration. We have been preparing the festivities for weeks while taking note of the days getting shorter and colder. We picked out a Christmas tree and dressed it up with our favorite decorations. The dinner invitations have been extended. What’s left is getting the last minute shopping out of the way and to start preparing the Christmas dinner and party. Many people mention that they miss the “real” Christmas spirit while vacationing in the Caribbean. What often really happens is that they don’t associate the sun, an all-inclusive resort and an awesome beach with the type of Christmas they are accustomed to. The more I learn about the Caribbean, its people, history and traditions, the more I realize that a Caribbean Christmas celebration can be as spiritual as anywhere else on the planet. It is a privilege to travel around the Caribbean and to see how people with so many different ethnic backgrounds, religions and customs have no problem living together. Everyone is being able to practice their believes without having to worry about judgments of others. It’s not that easy to come up with a better example of peaceful coexistence between people who had to overcome numerous adversaries in the past. Even without the snow, a real Christmas tree and last minute shopping stress, there is a lot of Christmas spirit to be found in every Caribbean destination, especially during the year-end Carnivals and events. Go and find out for your self how a Caribbean Christmas celebration, like the Carnival in St. Kitts, unites cultures and how worship is integrated in a wonderful celebration of life where everyone is invited.
