21 of us travelled from Toronto on Feb 9th and stayed until the 16th. Debbie and I were married on Valentines day at the resort. The staff was excellent. Everything they did to make our day so beautiful was done to perfection. Tulio, is a great person. He always met with us at a moments notice and did everything he could to make my lovely wife happy…So then I was happy too. The resort in whole was perfect. The food was plentyfull with something for everyone. We travel every year and this is the first time that everyone made it through a whole week enjoying the food at every meal. The weather was perfect being over 30 degrees C every day with no rain at all…..we’ll be back
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
We went on a snorkel trip and zip lining…..both trips were excellent.
Beach/Pools/Grounds
The pool was the most popular place to hang out. The girls at the pool bar kept us all well stocked with drinks. We did spend a bit of time in the surf and it was wonderfull. Everyone said that if there was a beach bar we would have spent alot more time at the beach….
Other Comments
The extra cost for our wedding was $2000USD plus $200USD for the video…..It was worth every penny. The pictures showing the mountains and the surf in the background are amazing….this was a dream come true…..and we all can’t wait to go back…….
Restaurants and Bars
There is one main buffet resaurant and a snack bar. There is 2 alacart one seafood and one steak. We ate at all the resaurants and as I said before….we all enjoyed every meal.
Be aware that they open the resort to the general public on the weekends…so it becomes very busy, Thursday afternoon until Sunday morning.
Rooms
The rooms were very nice with a stocked fridge everyday with a couple of beers and a couple of pops.
Your Arrival
We also travelled from San Jose by bus and ferry. We left Toronto at 6:25am and arrived at the resort at 5 pm. Very beautiful sight seeing trip….but too long of a day. We all upgraded and flew back. I would recomend flying both ways from San Jose.
The food was wonderful!

Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel
We had a bad experience with an attempted bachelorette party – the hired driver refused to take us where we wanted to go – only taking us to the disco he recommended — we ended up going back to the hotel and trying to continue our party there. Suggest you get something in writing when dealing with the drivers – they may be getting ‘kick-backs’ from the different bars/restaurants in Tamarindo. We did end up getting back our $120 – but it took some talking. Our group went ATVing several times and each time got a different view of the countryside. The men golfed – the course looked beautiful, but it was just too hot/humid to attempt golfing — they quit after only 13 holes and opted for the swim-up bar in the pool. Some of the group went to the rainforest and others went zip-lining. Some also used the spa facilities and seemed pleased with them. The major activity of our large party was "The Wedding" which was held on Friday. The Romance Director didn’t have a pleasant attitude toward the event and after many ‘hiccups’ in the planning stages, the wedding went off as planned. The ‘reception’ was held in the disco and the food served was amazing. We all had a great time eating and dancing. The bride and groom then honeymooned in the Arenal area of Costa Rica — with a view of the volcano.
Arrival: May 19-26
We were in Costa Rica for our son’s wedding. Some of the wedding guests preceeded us to the resort, we arrived on Tuesday. We were met at the airport by two limo-buses for our group of 8. Enroute we were given a ‘tour’ of the Costa Rican countryside, including a stop at a local liquor store to buy beers and 199 Viejo calling cards — very tasty, the beers that is!
Beach/Pools/Grounds
The pool was very warm (to my liking) – probably due to the extreme heat and humidity encountered in May. The grounds were kept up nicely, with very little interruption of our peace and quiet. The groundskeepers even would come to the pool to tell us that the monkeys were in trees near us, just in case we would like to watch them. The beach was a little disappointing — it was small and there didn’t seem to be any service out there, i.e., chairs, blankets, etc. We stayed in the pool most of the time, but would have enjoyed being on the beach if there were accommodations. The beach vendors were entertaining!
Other Comments
Be careful using the phone in the room to call the United States – make sure you get and use the 199 card — it seemed to be the easiest and most efficient way to stay in touch with the States. I took my laptop and got great signals — there are wi-fi stations at all the restaurants and at the pool. You can also get wi-fi in the villa near these areas – unfortunately our room was not one of these villa, so we carted the laptop to breakfast every morning and logged on there. No problem. There was a slight fee for wireless, but some in the group with laptops got wi-fi without having to pay for the service. Suggest you try before you buy! We had some problems with Swiss Travel (our travel agents at the hotel) – especially due to language barriers. The majority of the employees that dealt with the public spoke moderate English, which made it easy to communicate. Our stay at Paradisus was great – but don’t know if I would go back to Costa Rica again — perhaps if the humidity wasn’t as high in other months — like when the whales visit offshore, or the turtles make their trip up onto the beaches.
Restaurants and Bars
The food was wonderful! We were expecting some bland Costa Rican fare, but were very pleasantly surprized by the tasty food served for breakfast and lunch. They seem to have Americanized the entrees, but still managed to put a tropical twist on things. The wait staff was wonderful and very attentive. We only had one surly waiter (Gabi’s restaurant) and he might just have had a bad day. The Hostesses were gracious and the bartenders were outstanding — especially at the swim-up bar, which was generally crowded, but we didn’t experience any delay in getting service. Some employees that gave us exceptional service were Carolina, Roberto, Minor, and Kenneth. I don’t remember the names of the other wait-staff employees at Mitra, but they were great in the morning with coffee and water for us. Several of the restaurants were not air-conditioned (Mitra, 19th Hole, Snack Shack and the lunch area near the pool) but the other restaurants were (italian, japanese, mexican, Gabi ). The Italian restaurant was very good – we ate there twice. The Mexican restaurant was not air-conditioned when we arrived for our reservations, but it was soon fixed. Had a nice experience at the Spices Restaurant (Japanese-style food) – they serve a variety of sushi appetizers so you don’t have to pick and choose — very helpful for those of us who were unfamiliar with sushi, etc. It was a dining experience for some of our group — but at least they tried some of the foods. The entrees were delicious – for all – and the Flaming Coffee was great. The desserts at all the restaurants were excellent and should not be missed. Every night there was a show at Mitra and most of our group tried to make an appearance there. After the show, it was on to the Disco or the casino. Plenty of things to do at night!
Rooms
Costa Rica was very humid in May – don’t know if this is usual year-round, but air-conditioning was #1 on our list of ‘must finds’. Our group had a variety of styles of rooms — one room had a completely air-conditioned enclosed veranda, while the others were not. Some had two queen beds, or a king, or two queen beds together. All rooms were very clean and completely air-conditioned. One of our group even got upgraded to Royal Service — VERY nice! We didn’t opt for this service due to the size of our group and financial situations. However, we could not have had as much fun if part of our group was in RS and the rest at the main pool. All amenities seemed to be the same for each class — at least we didn’t notice any difference in treatment. We have had up-graded service at many other resort hotels in the past, but didn’t seem to miss it this trip. Perhaps this was due to the large size of the group and the many places to go on the resort properties.
We would definitely reccommend getting married at this resort

Arrival: Dec 2008/Jan 2009
We arrived in San Jose on Dec. 30,08. Customs was very quick. There were 11 people in our party, including a 9 month old baby. We decided to take the short flight from San Jose to Tambor ( remember to take your bathing suit with you as your luggage will go on the ferry and arrive later at the resort). Great trip, amazing scenary. Check in was fast.and friendly
Rooms
We were in the green building (600’s) right beside the Nature Park and the ocean. It was only a short walk to everything, but far enough away not to be disturbed. The Howler Monkeys would come and visit the fruit trees infront of our rooms everyday, and there were iguanas everywhere :). Rooms were really clean, Mini bar in some the rooms was stocked daily with pop, water and beer, other rooms did have to ask for it to be refilled but this was no problem. Lots of Hot water, A/C was awesome. Rooms on the corners of the building had hamocks on their balconies and they all had tables and chairs.

Old Reviews – Getting married in the Caribbean

Barcelo Playa Tambor
We were married at the resort on the beach and it was amazing! The aisle and gazebo were covered in bright flower petels and the chairs also had flowers on them. Their was an arch made out of palm fronds and flowers that was beuatiful. I was picked up at our room by a horse and carriage and the ride along the beach to the ceremony was so much fun! We paid an extra fee to have a private dinner in the garden for everyone who attended the wedding and it was well worth the extra cost. The food was very good and more than enough than we needed. The food and dinner tables were decorated with lots of flowers and animal sculptures made out of fruits and vegetables. The wedding package included a photographer who was excellant. He took the pictures we wanted but also took a lot of unposed shots. We received all of the pictures (400+) on a CD before we left the resort.

We would definately reccommend getting married at this resort. The planning process was very straight forward and all of my emails to the resort staff and lawyer (provided by the resort) were returned within one business day and answered my questions. Our wedding day was beautiful and a lot of fun and the resort staff were excellent!

Hilton Papagayo
the wedding was awesome!! The wedding planner took care of everything. it was a no stress situation from the time we booked the wedding to when it actually took place on the beach. I had alot of contact with the wedding planner via email who was very good at answering all my bride to be questions. I met with them upon my arrival and picked out the location of the ceremony ( beach) and where my dinner would be, ( poolside) and what my menu would be ( filet mignon and chicken parmesan) to how i wanted the beach decorated and what colour flowers i wanted for my bouquet and hair, to arranging spa services for my wedding day massage with my maid of honour. The were really good as i did have anxiety surrounding the pending take over by hilton and did not want that to interfere with my wedding plans but everything was perfect. The planner also connected me with the lawyer who was also very good and took care of all my documents and legalities which was included int he wedding package.

Photographer

As recommended by the wedding planner i used juan Cantillia from Pronto Foto. He was fabulous, all my guests commented on how professional he was, and the pictures that i got were fabulous, all 900 of them. He works with his wife who spent time in my room while i was getting ready while he was with the groom to be taking picture after picture. He was very creative in how he took the pictures and i was very very pleased with his work and how he interacted with me and my guests. if anyone would like to see them i would be honoured to post any. You can see a sample of his work is you go to www.steveandshelbieswedding.com ANy bride who might be reading this feel free to contact me for questions as i searched looking for someone to answer my destination wedding questions who had been married in the hot sun before and did not find anyone….
