Currency?? | Debbie's Caribbean Resort Reviews Forums

I think I may be heading to Honduras in July for a two week volunteer program. I`m just wondering what kind of $$ to use? Do I use Lempiras, and can I get them here in Canada? Or do I get US and use that? I won`t be needing to take much because I`ll probably not be out and about much but I`m sure I`ll be able to sneak in a bit of shopping
Take US currency with you to Honduras.

You can not change Canadian money over to US in Honduras so make sure you hit the bank before you leave Canada.

Was anyone smart enough to stock up on some US before our dollar dropped. I did not.
I’ve got to be one of the luckiest forum members here! I’ve got all the bases covered.

I’m self-employed with some international projects so I’ve been able to negotiate my professional fees to be paid in Euros, US dollars and CDN dollars depending on the contract. I also get an annual royalty cheque in US dollars for my publications.

Unfortunately, I am in the middle of renovations at home and did not have the extra cash to buy US money when it was at a low.I do however have a US account at Royal Bank that I add to whenever I have extra cash.Royal Bank will also let you roll US coins and add it to your account as dollars. I have not done this but I know several people that do collect US coins until they have enough to roll and add it to their account.

We had talked about changing our $$ to US$$ back when the rate was good but the cash always seemed to be needed elsewhere… Hopefully our $$ will gain a bit…I had also thought about starting a US account but that didn`t happen either…I guess I need to get off my butt and start doing things…Freedom Ryder, you said to take US$ with me. Will I have to change that to their currency while I`m there or will the US$ be accepted at most places?

Thanks for your help..

You will be able to spend the US Currency. Most of the businesses etc… prefer to have US money. I did end up with some Lempiras from a store which gave me their currency for the change they owed me from US money. I found a store in West End that sold awesome ice cream and spent my Lempiras there, lol.Try to bring small bills so You do have the exact amount when you purchase something so you do not end up with their currency as change. Some stores will give you back US change but quite a bit of places will not.

We brought down both $US and Lempiras. It took the bank about one-two weeks to get in. We usually find it helpful to bring some local currency with us wherever we go. When buying/bargaining for something, we would get a price in both $US and local currency, then do a quick mental calculation and pay in whichever would be the better bargain. We found a noticable difference while bargaining with taxis with Lempiras being the better deal.Salud
