Thanks for the list. I wish we could bring more than 2 bottles home.
For a special occasion there’s Maximo Extra Anejo for 1700 CUC. Available at the Holguin airport.

Thanks for the list; how kind of you to take the time

Always happy to share useful (alcohol-related) information!!!

Sure would love a bottle of Maximo. When the LottoMax comes through, I guess!

The price caught my eye, too :o. I didn’t know they made rum that expensive. I wonder what it tastes like

A few years ago I went to a special Havana Club tasting event and they had a bottle of Maximo available for testing. I think it was 50 CUC for a tiny little shot.

In any case at the end of the night I scooped the (empty) Maximo bottle and took it home. It now sits in my bar, filled with cheap rum. When I happen to have a rum connoisseur over it’s funny to give them a heart attack when I pour a bunch of Coke into the glass with the “Maximo.”

I must admit, I do love a cheap sight gag…

I did the same thing a while back with a bottle of Remy Martin XO. Finished it off one evening with a neighbor, along with a nice Cohiba and then aged a bottle of the cheapest gut rot brandy I could find into the XO bottle. A few months back after a meeting at our home I offered everyone a drink. One of our “know it alls” spied the XO in my liquor cabinet and requested a shot of that. I played it up big time by going and getting him a proper crystal glass. Well, he sniffed it, he rolled it around in the glass, being the connoisseur that he is, raved about how smooth it was. A few of us in the room knew the real story. It was hard keeping a straight face.

I bought a sample shot of HC Gran Reserva whilst at Cayo Largo in June. The sample was 7 CUC per and when my shot was poured the bartender threw out the bottle with about an ounce left in it. I scooped the bottle and box. I only open it to remind myself what a 500 CUC rum smells like. It was worth the 7CUC.

Love it! I thought I was the only one who did this sort of thing!

Honesty is great isn’t it? Ask me about my 24 year old bottle of “The Glenlivet 21 Archive” … Maybe Glenfiddich 18 at best. Sometimes/Rarely JW12. Currently Glenlivet 12. Time to refill the Legendario??

LOL

BigJohn, A $7 shot times 40 Oz for a large bottle is $280??

Hahaha, I’m guilty of doing this as well except in our case instead of rum it’s with single malt scotch. We have a colleague who thinks he’s a scotch expert. Teacher’s (which is blended and not especially good) is his brand of choice so that’s what gets put into the empty Lagavulin bottle. To make him feel extra special, we let him have his “own” bottle while hubbie pours from the other one. It’s been over 10 years and the “expert” hasn’t caught on the to ruse. You’d think a Scotsman should know his scotch!

Thanks for the current rum price list!

Folks, I’m just not seeing how tricking/belittling a guest in your home is funny. I don’t care whether you like them or don’t, a good host should treat all guests with respect!

I was thinking the same thing. I thought maybe I was the only one.

a good host should treat all guests with respect!

…and the reverse should apply as well:- guests should respect their hosts!

Unfortunately though when hosting an open house type of gathering for business colleagues, the host doesn’t always have the luxury of being selective with who is “invited”. I think we all know at least one professional colleague/co-worker who we really prefer not to socialize with.

…and that is the person you feed the gut rot to!!

Ron Legendario Elixir de Cuba 6.60[/quote]

Back to “on topic” – eloisegirl, I’m thrilled to see the Elixir on your list. Past couple of years, I’ve had trouble finding it so this gives me hope for our next trip. I’ve been hoarding my last bottle and treating myself only on special occasions. My fear is finishing it off and not being able to replace it :’(

The only place I saw it was at the LCDH in Santa Clara – and this was an LCDH that our taxi driver took us to – it was not near the central square. We were a few blocks from the central square, on the verge of entering a residential zone, and we were near the train tracks. The store was not remarkable on the outside (I am amazed anyone could find it! But our driver is from Santa Clara, so he’d know the layout). Inside, they had a bottle of Maximo on display for 1700 CUC, and a fabulous walk in humidor, a wall of rums including Legendario, Caney, etc., and the Punch mini’s I paid 11.70 for elsewhere were 4.70. The box of R & J no. 2’s my friend bought was literally HALF PRICE from the LCDH at the Estrellas market on Cayo Santa Maria (82 CUC instead of 160) ETA: This store is across from the cigar factory.

We’ve got an over night trip to Havana planned and I intend to keep my eyes peeled. First time I found, if I recall correctly, was in the Romeo y Julieta factory store. I had no idea what it was but the name was intriguing. My “best buy” that trip :). After that, I didn’t see it again until I found it at Varadero airport but that was a few years ago. I bought the last 3 bottles and now I’m down to hoarding ::). Maybe, like you, I’ll find it in some unexpected place as we wander around Old Havana. By the way, I can relate to your finding a little tucked away gem and not making note of the location. I should know better than to rely on my memory :
