	Glad you had a great trip – did you discuss this event with any Mexicans? I would think hotel staff would be upset as reduced visitors will impact their work place. Fewer tourists = less work.

I guess tourism is going to take a nosedive in Halifax when the tourist read this article. Crime happens everywhere, no place is immune. Go on vacation, enjoy yourself, remember not to leave your common sense in the suitcase. Bad things can and do happen to good people. I don’t think at all that Canadians are being targeted, that is just stupid. It’s not like we wear a flag on our arm, and advertise the fact where we are from.

We just got back from the Rivier Maya (Akumal Beach Resort) and had an excellent time. Went out and explored the area on our own and via taxi. Common sense goes a long way. This was our first time in Mexico and we are hooked…. Really want to go back. Will post my review shortly.

Hi everyone,Have not been on here alot but in April/May we will return to Mexico for the 6th time since 2008. We started out in resorts but now rent condos or stay in small hotels and love it. We have stayed in Cancun, Playa, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres and Puerto Morales. We interact with the locals, and travel off the beaten path. We have never felt unsafe but we do not do anything to attract trouble. Personally I feel many people leave their common sense at home when they go on vacation. In Sept I traveled with a friend for 9 nights to Playa to celebrate my 50th. We had a great time and as 2 women alone we did not have any problems.It frustrates me when people who have never been there appear shocked to find out where we prefer to vacation.We will continue to vacation in Mexico. We love the people, the culture and the food.

It is now Feb17th and we hear nothing.
Most of the big hotel chains have surveillance cameras everywhere as well as card systems for all hotel room doors. It is possible to review everybody and their where a bouts. This includes staff, the exact time someone entered a room and where they went. Both the Barcelo and Riu chains can provide videos of everything that goes on. Why did they not provide it?

In Vegas they have people watching you from secret rooms. They probably can see you get off the plane, everything you do till you get back on the plane!!!

Key card locks are usually simple battery operated terminals. Most are not connected to allow time stamps on when the door was entered. I think you would be shocked at how many people have a key card that allows access to every room in a resort or hotel. The better the chain, the more they care about security. The more easily the hotel will be investigated and/or sued, the more they care about security. Hotels/resorts are not all that profitable these days. Cutbacks are a way of life everywhere.Vegas is a totally different animal. Most outside surveillance is done with money supplied by Homeland Security (geysers of cash) and hotel surveillance is done with casino profits. Provided that you do your homework (most don’t) many areas of Mexico are safe but even I will not travel to problem areas. I’m on a holiday to relax and I can’t do that by constantly looking over my shoulder. By comparison, I once stayed at a major motel chain in Michigan due to blowing snow and being completely exhausted. We moved the large dresser to barricade the door to feel a bit safer and moved our bed away from the window. The next morning, lots of police around as someone in a unit nearby was murdered overnight.

When your number is up, it’s up. Enjoy life while you can.

	She is now home from the hospital.The medical staff must have wired her jaw shut as MOM is still the word. Oh, the husband continues to thank all for their support. Mean while every one thinks Mexico is the place NOT to go. As much as feel for her and her family, why can’t they clear the air and tell us the TRUTH!

I live in Mexico and feel safe most times. Mexico is a beautiful place with beautiful people but a handful of criminals are taking over the place. These people will not likely target you but you need to avoid looking for drugs or being in dark places at night. Two advises:Don´t brag or wear jewerly

	Been to Mexico nine times and feel like I am at home. You have to use common sense, after all you can go downtown Edmonton and get shot or mugged. Don’t get drunk and stupid. Don’t go anywhere alone when drunk or at night. Be courteous and respectful. You are a visitor "in your grandmothers house" so to speak.

So you normally go to a bar off the resort until 4 am ? I’ve been in PDC and I was not terribly comfortable walking the side streets with my wife after dark trying to find the cab stand. However, I can’t think of too many cities in the world I would not feel the same way about. I would not feel safe walking the back streets of Havana at 4 in the morning, drunk.

We did travel the roads in a collectivo (small public bus) and felt absolutely safe at all times. The Mexicans we met were very friendly and amazingly hard working.
