HolaFor those travelers heading to the ‘Henry Morgan Resort’ in Roatan Honduras, I just wanted to remind You that the Children from the local Orphanage visit the resort on Saturdays for sure and some days through the week. The Children go there to eat, play, swim etc…. and anything You bring to them would be gratefully appreciated.
I know Mia, Myself as well as Wossa have met the Children and do bring items to them which they are so thankful for. The Children have very little that they can call their own. Since we are not sure what the Children receive in the way of donations of clothes, shoes etc… that we have have brought for them, this year we have decide to bring only items which we can give directly to the Children when we see them at the resort. We will bring large zip lock bags and fill them while we are at the resort and then distribute them to the Children directly. For those interested in bringing things I have compiled a short list of items that the children loved receiving last year.Puzzles, skipping ropes, bouncy balls, small toy’s, dolls, learning cards (math, alphabet), costume jewelry, hair accessories, combs, brushes, movies, candy, treats of any kind, baseballs and gloves, Frisbees, yo-yo’s, etc….This year we will also be bringing photos we took of them last year as well as small frames to put the photos in. Mia and Wossa may also have some input as to what the Children would enjoy having. Freedom Ryder 8-)…………… |

![]() The children themselves took many pictures of each other with our digital cameras and where amazed they could see them back on the screens immediately. We have some awesome pictures of the kids that we’ll get printed and framed up before we leave. |
![]() Mia Yes Mia, I also hope others traveling to the Henry Morgan think of the kids if they have extra room in their luggage for goodies for them. Wossa and I enjoyed every minute we spent with the Children at the Orphanage as well as at the resort. Freedom Ryder 8-)……………… |

We travelled there several years ago and took half a suitcase full of Spanish/English dictionaries. They were well received. I haven’t checked lately but the flights were so cheap that we could spend extra on the dictionaries. Well recommended. |
|
![]() Hola CtocAwesome idea bringing Spanish/English Dictionaries to Hondruas to give away. We will add them to our list. Freedom Ryder 8-)……………. |

Another idea Freedom Ryder is ballet shoes. A lot of the little kids aspire to be ballet dancers. We buy them used from the dance places around us for next to nothing and always take them to Cuba with us. They are delighted by them. |

I am looking to go somewhere to volunteer in the next year or so. I`ve been looking at Honduras, Haiti and Sri Lanka as possible destinations. I have found an organization that works in Sri Lanka that is headed up by a lady here in my home town. It`s a great organization that works with widows but as a childcare provider I want to do something with kids. Just wondering if any of you know of any good groups in the Roatan area? I`ve been looking on line and see lots of groups but you never know which ones are the good ones.I don`t speak spanish (only a few words from vacationing in the DR) but I love kids and have lots of experience with special needs children. I also have level 2 sign language, which in truth doesn`t go very far with adults but good with kids. |

I think it’s really special that you are all taking part in this ![]() My husband and I have spent some time teaching kids in the DR and one item that seems to go over REALLY well is fat sidewalk chalk…they just gobble it up! Wall doodles, yard games, the possibilities are endless Another item they seem to love is bubbles. We had a few volunteers bring flats of the small bottles that people pass out at weddings, so each child could have their own – as you have pointed out, having something that’s all your own is a big deal to some of these kids. There’s a little literacy organization in Mexico that collects McDonald’s Happy Meal toys to use as reading incentive prizes for the children…if you let people know that you’re saving these up, you’ll have a truck load in no time.Anyway, I think what you guys are doing is great and I would love to hear more about it and see some pics! nsfamily – if you’re at all interested in volunteering in the DR, shoot me a PM and we can chat. I’ve got lots of pics and info on the area we go to and the organization we work through |

![]() Mia Hi MiaI called Globespan Head office this morning and spoke with their customer relations department to find out their policies about HA and Scuba allowance. Interestingly enough they where unaware of any company schedules to fly from Toronto to Honduras over the winter. The woman spent 15 minutes on the phone making enquiries for me, and then found out that they have been chartered by another airline company to do these flights on someone else behalf ! Basically another carrier using their planes as it was explained to me. I asked who that would be for, but she said that she was unable to say.I asked her about the companies policy regarding allowance of HA and Scuba. Scuba gear will be charged at £15.00 per way ($30) and needs to be made known to the airline at the time of booking, or as soon as possible after the booking is made to ensure they will accept it. Maximum they will allow is 16kg’s. The company does not have a policy for HA and any additional baggage will be chargeable. Provided it is purchased in advance they charge £15 ($30) per 10kg’s to a maximum of 50kg’s. Let me know if you need me to get any other information for you as it’s not a problem calling them. The feeling I got from Globespan was this was all news to them and they seemed unaware of these flights. Whether the baggage allowance will be still set by Globespans policies, or by who ever has chartered them will have to be seen. Let us know how you get on with Conquest and if they confirm anything different from what Globespan confirmed to me.Wossa……. ;D |

Hola Wossa Thankyou so much for taking the time to call Globespan. No wonder they were confused. The error was made by my travel agent and she appologizes profusely. Skyservice is flying to Roatan same times and same days. I called to confirm their pollicies , sports equipment is still free! You still have to request excess baggage waiver as before.Skyservice rep said you can request waiver as soon as you have your flight info. THANKS again Wossa and sorry to have jumped the gun.Have heard from Rafa and he is happy to hear that we including you and Freedom are returning. I am waiting to hear from the doctor at Clinica Esperanza as to their needs and then I will request items from NJT.

Be careful if you are giving things directly to the children. I would advise against giving candy to the children directly. Just imagine if one of those children are diabetic and had his candy taken away; that would be so cruel. I would check with the staff before you jsut start handing out stuff to the kids.I think it’s a wonderful idea that the hotel allows the orphans to use the facilities and equally wonderful that people bring things for these needy children! | |

Hi,Our family will be spending the day in Roatan on Dec 22nd and wanted to bring medical supplies, toys and treats to the orphanage. I’ve been reading the posts about the orphanage, however would like more information on who to contact in advance to let them know when we are arriving and what we can bring. I work in the medical field and would like to ensure that we bring the right types of supplies. Thanks in advance.
