Enter Paradise – Cayo Largo | Debbie's Caribbean Resort Reviews Forums

I love CL because of the serenity and tranquility it provides. It is so nice to not be surrounded by crowds or loud music/noise. To me, there is a magical energy there, unlike anywhere else. It is a perfect place to recharge your batteries and fill up with peace. Then there are the employees, some of whom have been there for several years, and arriving on CL feels like visiting family.

A special place indeed!

Cayo Largo is our home away from home…. like Anne mentioned above…peace and quiet is what you get. My favourite thing to do on Cayo Largo is…. nothing at all! I’m a certified beach bum and for that Cayo Largo is perfect. Endless unspoiled beaches, good food and friendly people make us go back every year.

We have never been and are going in January 2015. My step-brother recommended the Sol Pelicano. We love to play in the waves and I saw that the waves can get quite big here so looking forward to some fun in the sun

Have fun but be careful….

Depending on the direction of the wind it will have drastic effect on the waves. I’ve seen it where the ocean is like glass…not a ripple. However, when the red flag is up it can be dangerous. The under-tow can be very strong. Earlier this year we had a red flag day. I’m not a small person and even I had difficulty to keep my footing in knee-high water. Other days you have gentle waves to play in for hours… just watch the sunburn!

oh I wouldn’t even chance it on a red flag day…did that once in Varadero and I was quite surprised by the undertow.

We agree totally with AnneM’s and Blixem’s sentiments about Cayo Largo. We have been visiting there since 1991 and missed only one year (1994,) we went to Delta Sierra Mar that year. For us the place and the vibe there are too beautiful for words to describe, more like a ‘romantic, peaceful and serene state of mind’ rather than a physical place. We’ve stayed at all the resorts except Playa Blanca and have enjoyed each and every one of those hotels in their own right. The original Capricho was our favorite, our Robinson Crusoe Island cottage in the tropics. It was always so wonderful dragging our lounges down to the Capricho beach every night after dinner and laying there listening to the crash of the waves while looking up at the billions of stars in the sky.Cayo Largo was, and still is, our once-a-year romantic tropical getaway from our mostly humdrum lives here in the great White North. We are again looking forward to our visit to the Pelicano in January 2015.

The original Capricho from the early 90s.

The Villa Coral pool from the early 90s.

The Pelicano pool area from the mid to late 90s before it was a Sol property.

Oh my goodness, those pictures are bringing back so many memories!!! Wasn’t it fun when you could stay at one resort and eat/drink at all the others?! Did you get the chance to experience the crazy shuttle driver who would pretend to stop at the Pelicano then go around the entrance several times?!
Hi AnneM. It sure was fun when it was an all-inclusive with the Pelicano, Lindamar, Soledad, Villa Coral, Isla del Sur, Iguana and Capricho available as one unit. We just loved to have breakfast at the Capricho, lunch at the Lindamar Ranchon, and dinner at the Pelicano and a cold beer anywhere we wanted during our walks through the properties. For us the best view of the beach was while eating lunch at the Lindamar Ranchon. We’re not too familiar with the bus driver that went in circles at the Pelicano. However, he may have been the same driver (Pedro I think) that while driving you from the airport played his guitar. 🙂 I think I did see him a couple of years ago. Thank goodness cell phones weren’t popular at the time, playing the guitar and using his cell phone would have been pretty dangerous.

LOL… Best memory this year…First full day at SCL, hubby’s sunglasses get ripped off his head twice by the "rogue waves" within the first hour or so. Fortunately, I was able to retrieve them for him the first time, only because when I saw them in the clear water and it was too deep for me to reach, I used my foot to secure them. Second time, it was just before noon, and he had been in the water on his own. Thinking he’d do the same as me using his feet, but due to the sand being "stirred up" he couldnt see the bottom. After awhile…. Eureka! He felt his glasses and used his toes to grab ahold of them. It was only as he brought them up to his hands…that he could finally see through the crystal clear water ~ he wasn’t holding his sunglasses… but a huge crab!

Lost 3 pairs of sunglasses this March. One pair of special Fiat branded glasses that were a gift less than 24 hours before by a friend who lost regular glasses as well. While sweeping the sand I found a pair of glasses but not mine.Wild waves for almost all of the 2 weeks. Once out to my chest the waves were no problem but the breakers getting out were lots of fun. Rip currents were easy to see in 2 parts of the beach and people avoided them.

I think that bus driver still works on CL. I’ll find a video from last year to post. Driving with an elbow while playing harmonica/working the PA, answering his radio and singing all at the same time. I’m missing him right now with snow on the lawn.
