We are planning a trip to St. Martin in December and staying near the Cupecoy Beach area. We’ve never been to this island and don’t really know a lot about it. We’d like to do some sightseeing and shopping. Is it a relatively safe island for us to go off the resort & tour around ? Any additional suggestions/advice for us newbies would be appreciated. |

You will have an absolutely wonderful time on this gorgeous island. It is one of the safest islands we have ever gone to and that number is large. Make a point of going to Philipsburg to do your duty free shopping. They have everything there you could possibly want to buy at a very low price. Rent a car and do a tour of the island also. Any suggestions on which Hotel to stay at? Should we go all inclusive or not? Is it safe to rent a car while there and go out on your own? |

It is perfectly safe to rent a car and travel all over the island. We have done this several times and had absolutely no problems. However always remember just like home do not take your valuables with you . There are just a few AI resorts on the Dutch side, Sonesta Great Bay Beach & Casino Resort, Divi Resort, and the Sonesta Maho all on the Dutch side of the island. I do believe there is only one AI resort on the French side, Mercure Simson Beach Resort. There are a lot more not AI on the island but many of those do have free breakfast. I think you will find the restaurants here quite expensive to eat at. |

I checked the reviews for the Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort and they don’t look too good, Stills have you ever stayed at this hotel? If so what did you think of it? You seemed to have travelled alot we are just starting out. |

I have stayed at this resort twice, once before the renovations and once after the renovations. It is probably the best AI resort on the island. However I would give it a three and a half stars. Everything is just fine there and would go back in a heart beat. It is so close to the shopping area also. I know many people who return to this resort every year. |
