I used to take anti-anxiety pills to get through a flight but now I can flight without them..I still hate it but try to focus on other things while flying… the movie.. the drinks.. I just don’t let myself think about the plane..I want to get where I am going more than the fear of the plane.

I don’t hate flying, but as I have gotten"OLDER"(exclamation points ON PURPOSE!!), claustraphobia is my problem!(or is that the same thing?) I broke a bone in my foot a few years ago, had a cast put on, and kept dreaming that I was drowning! I just about went foolish, wanted to rip that thing off, the Dr cut it off and told me about the claust. He did have to put a partial-cast on and wrap with elasto-bandage(as soon as I knew I could cut it off, I was fine!) Since then I’ve taken meds with me, but only needed them a few times. One time I went to get them before departing in Cuba, and hubby put them in the LUGGAGE!(gone!!) He was almost gone too, here we were this crazed woman, screaming and running after this poor man, all over the airport! Well , I didn’t catch him, but if I would have…….. Needless to say, he dosen’t touch ’em anymore!! LOL

Absolutely! You don’t want to be on a plane and discover an allergy!

angelaluvtotravel 2008-03-12 13:33:18 UTC #21

Thanks to everyone for all the tips, I guess flying sucks for alot of people not just those with panic attacks. Did I mention I’m taking a flight on April 4th to Punta Cana?!? Ack. I’m excited and scared.

Thank for the tips! My DIL has panic attacks and is seeing a psychologist because we’re all supposed to fly out for a special occation in May. She says the sessions have helped but I’ll suggest she also ask for some medication, just in case. It’s a funny thing, as she has flown many times with no fears or attacks. It seemed to come over her all of a sudden. On her last plane, trip 7 years ago, she became nervous going down and had a full blown panic attack coming back. They had to assist her onto the plane.

Angela, you will love Punta Cana. To make things easier for you, make sure everything is ready ahead of time. You are not going until April 4 so you have lots of time. Everything should be packed and ready to go at least a day before your flight. Put your case(s) at the front door.

Make sure your carry on is packed also, including your tickets, money, passport etc. Your clothes that you will travel in are set out and something to change into is already packed in your carryon.

I found that the first thing to trigger a panic attack is because we/I have left something to the last minute.

Have a wonderful time.

I don’t condone drug use but I have used adavan on a few flights. I don’t mind flying, its just I am high strung and I cant sit still for long times. I am not very big so the tight seating area is not a big deal. In November the women that sat next to me took some adavan but she was still nervous. I took them once on a flight to Santo Domingo and I don’t remember the flight or much of my first day of the vacation.

I had my first panic attack a few weeks ago and ended up in the ER and have only taken 1 pill since (the day after), sometimes its just good to know you have those pills there "just incase"

Thats exactly how it happened for me. I used to travel everywhere, although I never really enjoyed the plane, it was never an issue enough for me to not go away. But after having an attack on a plane, it can really destroy your confidence levels to get back up there and do it again. I hope your daughter-in-law will be ok.

cheers
Angela

Thanks Missy. I never even thought that my procrastination could be anxiety-provoking but it certainly makes sense. I’ve been to Punta Cana before, and felt like it was paradise, thats why we chose to go there again for my first flight in awhile.

cheers

Another thing that I have not tried yet is buying some relaxation Cd’s to listen to while flying.

I’ve bought and d/led some really great meditation and flight relaxation cds, one of them is a prep for flying, and has noises of the airport, etc. I’m willing to try just about everything, meds, cds, therapy etc. Whatever it takes to get me away from here and into paradise.
What is a "nurse"..? Why the quotation marks? A nurse is a nurse.
Kaosandme: I guess I was trying to emphasize that the only way he’d travel was with his wife because she was a nurse.

Theponder, thanks and my sentiments exactly. I got a little ticked a week ago about someone being told off for writing in CAPS so I guess now the " " are out as well.

Sorry if it was hard to read!!!!

system 2008-03-12 19:02:57 UTC #31

I am a nurse. With the word nurse in quotation marks, it was as if someone was belittleing the Nursing profession.. What you have explained makes perfect sense, and I understand exactly what you meant..

Thank you for clarifying for me.

sunseeker6 2008-03-12 19:10:10 UTC #32

For the record I would never belittle a nurse, unless of course she gave me a bad needle!! lol

Ask for the bulk head seats or an aisle seat. The exit row seats are also roomier but aren’t assigned until you get to the gate in the terminal. You can request them then. Also, there are some teas that have a relaxing effect. My friend flew to Japan and was so strung out from the long trip that she was doing push-ups in the aisle! The flight attendant told her to sit down and then brought her some tea. She ended up falling asleep.
