Golfers paradise. When it comes to picking the best place to play golf in the Caribbean, there´s no discussion necessary. The Dominican Republic has no equal. Boasting more than 800 miles of turquoise coastline, the Dominican Republic has two golf courses in the top 50 of Golf Digest´s ranking of the 100 Best Courses Outside the U.S. World-renowned golf course architects have during the past 35 years built some of the world’s most memorable golf courses in the here Dominican Republic. Their names include Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Pete Dye, who in 1971 designed the Teeth of the Dog at Casa De Campo, La Romana, the first championship golf course in the Dominican Republic, which over the last three decades has gained reputation as one of the finest golf courses in the world. Other great golf courses have been popping up ever since. This summer, 28 golf courses will be in operation in the Dominican Republic. This total includes five 9-hole golf courses, two courses operating with nine holes but expanding to 18 holes within the next few months, and three 27-hole golf courses and eighteen 18-hole golf courses. It is a combination of the variety and quality of courses that you find in the Dominican Republic that set it apart from some of the other Caribbean islands. The tropical climate encourages tourist to fly in for week of golf all year round and since the majority of courses are found along the coast, non-golfing family members can just take a break on the beach or in the Spa of the luxury all-inclusive resort nearby. There are some hidden gems courses like the rustic 9-hole course set in the mountains at Jarabacoa, though understandably the larger golf courses steal the show. On the East coast, you’ll find various stunning golf facilities. The Punta Espada Golf Club, by Jack Nicklaus, is the first of three golf courses planned for the new Cap Cana resort. No less than 15 of its 18 holes overlook the sea and the landscape includes cliffs, beach and jungle. Pete Dye designed the Punta Cana Resort & Club, featuring four seaside holes and the par-72 course at the Roco Ki resort in Punta Cana, designed by golf legend Nick Faldo, opened in 2008 to rave reviews from golf experts. The Playa Grande Golf Course is located on the north coast of the Dominican Republic near the town of Rio San Juan. Playa Grande is one of the last courses designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Sr. The par 72 course sits atop towering cliffs overlooking the beach and sea, providing extraordinary views.
