I bet they didn’t announce on the ground before they left that the luggage was staying behind! Wouldn’t that have been a pleasant flight home for the flight attendants.
I will often travel in shorts (but never sandals) on the way home because it’s usually such a long day in a hot climate but winter gear is always stored in my carry-on which stays right at my feet. |

I travel back home, like I travel down…..with just the clothes I am wearing. While I wouldnt wear just shorts and flip flops in Jan home, I dress lightly as I find it warm waiting for flights and dont want the hassle of wearing gloves, hat, boot etc in Cuba or on the plane home.
At least it was on the way back…much easier to deal with…a pain yes, but not vacation ruining!! |

Me too, Monctonguy. Usually comfy capris, a top, and a hoodie. I probably do wear sandals because hello, runners with capris??? I may be a walking fashion faux-pas, but even I won’t go there. ![]() |

For the past 10 or so years, I always wear zip-off leg pants on the flight. I find them handy for weather conditions at both ends of the vacation. The leg gets zipped off before landing so I arrive wearing shorts and they get zipped back on while I’m waiting at the luggage carousel back home. We got caught off guard with a few cool windy days in Mexico back in 2003 so my light polar fleece jacket is always with me now.
Comfort is everything when I travel so fashion goes out the window. I’m getting too old to care! Lol!! |

I always wear my jeans on a plane. The planes are always too cold for me to wear shorts either outbound, or returning. But there was one time that we foolishly packed our winter jackets in our checked baggage, and sure enough, we arrived in YYC and didn’t see our luggage on the carousel. The flight went on to Vancouver, and our suitcases went with it. We eventually got our suitcases and contents back a week later, but in the meantime, I had to buy a new winter coat. Mrs. CJ had a couple extra, as like most women, she is always well-prepared.By the way, it was about -20 or -25 C when we arrived, so it was lucky that we are only a 20-minute taxi ride from the airport, and the cab driver waited out on the street to make sure we got into the house before he drove away.Since then, we always carry our winter jackets strapped between the handles of our carry-on bags.
There was a whole hullabaloo last year when some flights were rerouted and people didn’t have access to their checked baggage – only their carry-on. Some of those people were furious as they boarded a bus to overnight at a hotel in Fredericton in the middle of a snowstorm, decked in flip-flops, shorts & halter tops. Of course they were the loudest to complain. On another flight that was rerouted because of weather, a mother was extremely irritated that she didn’t have access to her checked baggage as she didn’t as much as have an extra diaper for her toddler. Another passenger was outraged because his medication was in his checked baggage. Bad, bad airline! How dare they reroute because of a snowstorm! |

I don’t feel any sympathy for anyone who can’t figure how how to dress upon arrival home. Mom can’t always be with you, sometimes you have to figure out this stuff on your own. Putting together a small piece of "what if" carry-on luggage is not rocket science. That said, the 5 day wait for the delayed luggage is unacceptable. Air Canada should have tried way harder to expedite that situation. At the very least they should have maintained daily updates as to what the hold up was.Cheers,

Travelling from a cold climate without adequate clothing in winter isn’t smart. Any problem with the aircraft that necessitates landing short of your destination may find you wearing unsuitable clothes for the climate, and of course in an emergency you would be really SOL. In a worst case scenario it would be stupid to survive a plane crash and die of exposure before rescuers could get to you!
That said, it’s hard to imagine that headwinds were so bad Air Canada had to leave all of the luggage behind. Or was this a combined flight and Calgary travellers lost the toss? |

![]() I’m not sure Oprah would be fun to travel with, LOL. Yeah, I’ll pass…lol |

I have gotten in the habit of even packing as much clothes as I can in my carry on to travel down. I have seen a few times people with no luggage all week at the resort. |

![]() I find the plane home is always cold so I dress with a fleece jacket(carried) and jeans, just enough to get me to my car and not freeze to death |

Don’t know what was wrong with us that time we put our coats in the checked luggage — brain dead, I guess. We had always carried our coats with us before, and always have since. The one time we put them in our checked luggage was the one time it got misdirected. At the airport in Cuba, everything looked right, as the bags were tagged for YYC. Apparently, they just got put in the wrong container.
It just seemed a hassle trying to carry our coats around in the airport waiting for our flight, and we got the bright idea that we wouldn’t have to do that and yet we could put on our coats in the airport after we picked up our bags. Seemed like a good idea at the time. |

![]() I’m not sure if every airport has a luggage storage service, but Halifax does. hiaa.ca/travel-checklist/luggage/ “Prices are $3 per day for small items to a $15 weekly maximum and $5 per day for each piece of luggage to a $25 weekly maximum (HST included).” |

I now budget into my travel expenses the price of underground parking at Trudeau airport in Montreal. I leave our coats and boots in the car, but we do wear comfy long pants and closed shoes on the plane, along with a sweatshirt. It is simply awesome to lock up your car, take an elevator and voilà, you are in the terminal! ![]() |

It could crash into the 10 ft snow bank at the end of my driveway and I’d throw you a coat for cleaning up the mess. Spot you a drink too! |
|
![]() ![]() I have enough stuff to carry around that I don’t want to have to deal with winter coats. That being said, I don’t travel in shorts. I always wear jeans, t-shirt and a hoodie with closed shoes. |

![]() I heard that there was some heavy duty stuff falling in your part of the world. Hope it gets better soon. |

People never think "that situation" will happen to them, but what if, for example, something like what happened to Air Canada Flight 646 back in December 1997 were to occur? An attempted missed approach resulted in a stall and a crash off the end of the runway, and it took some time in the snow, fog, and darkness before first responders could reach the aircraft. Under such conditions it would be extremely uncomfortable, to say the least, if a person was wading through snow in shorts and sandals! This particular flight was coming from Toronto, so presumably the passengers were wearing appropriate clothing.
cant prepare or plan for everything that could or might happen to you in life…otherwise you might as well live in a bubble…
Enjoy life to the fullest and don’t stress about it…..deal with the BS if/when it happens to you… |

The delay in return does not surprise me. There is not a daily flight there by A/C so they either waited for the next trip down or had to make cargo arrangements with other carriers. Good time to remind all to also put full address, itinerary and contact information INSIDE each piece of your luggage. |
