During a visit at the Playa Dorada Golf Club, I decide to order a white wine at the slightly dated and almost empty restaurant bar with a fabulous view over the golf course. Since I feel a bit lonely, staying by myself, at the Grand Paradise Playa Dorada Resort, I start up a conversation with Gary and John who are enjoying a cold beer while waiting on a friend before playing a round of golf.

Gary a retired architect designed his own house in the vicinity of Cabarete, about an hour from here where he lives these days with his Canadian wife. Gary tells me: “My wife wants us to move to Costa Rica, but I don’t think so!” It is wonderful here, I made a lot of new friends and in terms of playing golf: Sheer Heaven! There are many golf courses to choose from in the Dominican Republic. Some are a little farther away than others but that’s keeps it fun! Gary: “I also speak a fair amount of Spanish and I should mention that I learned my first few phrases from the Debbie’s website”. John, also Canadian, is a retired fireman. He visits his friend Gary regularly on this sundrenched island. “I am Gary’s personal entertainer “, he smiles. “I do not play golf but Gary could not find anyone else to keep him company”. After an hour the third “amigo” still did not show up at the Golf Club van Playa Dorada prompting Gary to decide to go ahead and play his game alone. The Dominican Caddy picks up Gary’s golf clubs and follows him politely. What a rough life does this retire Canadian has, I think, with a smile on my face and pay the 200 peso bill for my glass of wine.
