Might as well post the bad news here – Cuba – Debbie's Carribean Reviews Forums

bcundari 2016-08-11 00:41:19 UTC #21

It is absolutely disgusting that the DT thread, and all the heartfelt posts were removed !! I am just glad that Tomas’s Dad was able to read all the tributes to his son, before it was taken down. Getting SO sick of these petty minded demi-gods on TA. High time that people started behaving like adults ( or even decent human beings !!)

Jack, I didn’t see Tomas’ father’s message on TA before it all collapsed. I would have liked to have read that.

CJ: I knew that the TA post had been deleted (for ridiculous reasons). But I did not realize that a lot of members had also been banned. I had great esteem for DT and it breaks my heart that a tribute to Tomas has just disappeared with no recourse for a lot of his friends. And his father who probably was not expecting to outlive his son. I feel the thread was a comfort to his dad; and I do not regret posting on the thread. And TA has not banned me yet. I think I have expressed my feelings on various posts on TA; even mentioned that Debbie’s would be the place to go for posting in the future.

These postings on here and TT show humanity at its best. TA has a lot to learn; they should open their eyes and actually read was posted; not just closed the thread down because 3 or 4 or more people reported ‘inappropriate’. Someone said that TA is a non-profit organization; what a lot of BS. I use adblock when I read that forum – so are they not receiving profit to the advertising? I am so disappointed about TAs stance that I want them to ban me. And compared to a lot of posters, I’m just a junior member and poster.

The post from his dad was a thank you for all of the nice things members had posted when learning of his son’s death. He also expressed how comforting those posts were for his wife and Tomas’s daughter, their grand-daughter.
A few subsequent posters took TA to task for DT’s banning and the entire thread was removed. What a darned shame. I wish there was a copy of his dad’s post that we could add to our thread.

I hope you didn’t misinterpret my post on TA where I made the case that TA is a business, NON a non-profit and that it has a business model based on the free content provided my it’s members. Those members who provide the content that draws thousands to their website need to be respected, especially if they are going to call themselves a “community”. I also stated that if they wish to have a strictly controlled forum they need to run it like one with proper moderators. It’s their business and they can do as they wish but it’s just not working for me. It wouldn’t be the first forum I’ve left due to disagreements about how it’s run.

I’m taking a break from that place for a few months, at least.

sund0g:

Someone said that TA is a non-profit organization

TA is owned by Expedia one of the the biggest travel agencies in the world.

sund0g 2016-08-11 19:22:06 UTC #27

Griz: I didn’t misinterpret your post. I understand that members don’t give TA a dime. But they bring in the dough with ads and with the help of Expedia. I didn’t know that TA was a subsidiary of Expedia; but that explains why I had been receiving a lot of emails regarding travel in general. I put it all in spam, but it makes me think that Expedia has been sharing email addresses with other travel agencies.

Our tributes to DT were tossed aside like garbage – and every thread since regarding DT has been deleted. It bothers me so much, I will probably be the next member to voluntarily move. But I thank Debbie’s members for remembering him even though they were few; he was someone who knew the World; not just the Caribbean. I think he had a happy life and was doing what he wanted, when he wanted and dealt with any problems in a calm way without ruffling feathers. Miss him.

I did use the word “non-profit” in one of my posts and didn’t see that anywhere else so I just wanted to make myself clear since that thread has since been removed. I figured that you and I were on the same page.

Griz: No problemo! We definitely are on the same page. And I am still angry with TA and I think I’ll follow your example soon. I will probably start one more post on TA regarding the issue; if I’m not banned or deleted, I will continue reading TA but not post on TA.

Hope to read your new TA posts in a few months, we’re going to Cuba Nov 23 so try to work around my schedules before posting – just kidding !!!

Admin:

TA is no longer owned by Expedia. It’s a standalone company, TripAdvisor was spun off from Expedia in a public offering in December 2011.

Thanks for the update… I was just a few years late

Man, he could write:

  1. Re: prices for cuban dental work

18 May 2013, 16:35

“Wow, so many negative comments about dental work in Cuba. I guess the north American dental mafia it trying to protect its cash cow.”

Yes, the Cuba forum on TA is generally known for being host to thousands of U.S. and Canadian dentists trying to deter North Americans from visiting Cuba in hordes to have dental work done. You saw right through us.

“Here are some real information #1 longest surviving kidney transplant recipient in the world lives in Cuba,”

But it’s really annoying to walk around with a kidney in your mouth… …

I was reading a post on LP about Cubans of significant age, and was reminded of this. hfxjohn

Thank-you for starting this thread, allot going on and I missed all of this on TA. It is sickening what has occurred and so disrespectful to the memory of a person who spent years contributing to TA. Granted I did not always agree with DT, but then again I don’t know the real Cuba the way he did and don’t care to. Hubby and I just go for a beach vacation and to disconnect from the world as per say. We have our own home cleaning business and believe me we see enough of “the real world and people” and we need the time to unwind and have our turn to be looked after, so we tend not to get caught up in the culture or, the drama’s; in other words we don’t care, we are there for a vacation. Having said that it is nice to read though provoking points of view and to see other perspectives.

Regardless I do appreciate most people and am grateful for all the help and education that I have received over the years.
