I’ve heard that there is a mini zoo in the Guardalavaca area. Where exactly is it ? Does anyone have any details or pictures? |

Years ago when I stayed at Sol Luna Mares we went for an escorted hike and visited a "zoo" of sorts. Just a few sad animals and birds in cages in the forest, nothing special. |

I agree, nothing special really. It was off a path from the road to SRLM. The walk through the wooded area was nice and it leads down to a lagoon off Bahia Naranjo and a small beach on the Bay. The free animals were interesting, we saw and got close to several flamingos and ducks. We were the only ones there and the fellow looking after things gave us a tour around and let us handle some of the parrots. He was quite good at picking out birds that I would have missed and very quick at catching us several types of crabs to have a look at. All in all it was enjoyable but a proper zoo, it’s not.I should add that this was several years ago for me too, so I have no idea what the situation is there now. | |
There is a nice ecological park just behind Lunes/Mares that has a nice self/guided walk… 1st time we went we kept hearing loud noises but saw nothing until about 1/2 way through there it was….hermit crabs. The leaves were so dry that even these wee fellow walking in and under them sounded like an animal the size of a raccoon running through the under-brush. Nicely laid out, great view of the beach at the 2 lookouts. worth the 5 cuc to have some time in an undeveloped (other than the trail) area. wear shoes that you can walk on uneven terrain. |

It was pretty much indigenous birds turtles and reptiles. Depressing? Yes, somewhat, but no where near as depressing as a Delfinario or other places where primates are kept. |

Fairly sure that the local government shut down the zoo business but allowed owner to continue with horseback rides, probably all for the best. |
