NETFLIX launching in Cuba!! | Debbie's Caribbean Resort Reviews Forums

I am surprised to hear this.I haven’t been in Cuba since April/2014 so perhaps things have changed, but I can’t imagine based on my experiences with internet connections at the resorts watching a movie or a tv show on netflix down there.

Am I missing something, or have things drastically changed there since my last visit?!

the service can be so very slow, and at best inconsistent….this IS interesting how it would work

In January the wifi was fast enough to watch something on Netflix at SRLM, but would there be enough bandwidth for more than one person? That is not sure.

I don’t think that’s Netflix best move, but who knows? Things are moving fast regarding internet connections in Cuba. Think about it, even just a little over a year ago there was no wifi at any hotel and now it’s almost everywhere with quite adequate speed to check emails, facebook and stuff like that.

They said that 27% of Cubans using Internet and they would like to monetize on it. So is Netflix first US company that will openly start business in Cuba after Obama’s speech?

I love this line from DT on the Netflix announcement: "I am going to subscribe to their newsletters from now on instead of their stream and get my comedies for free."

I had a good laugh when I read the announcement and Don Tomas is spot on. I have to wonder where the 27% internet penetration comes from. That sounds like a gross overestimation to me. Are they counting a person with a smartphone who connects to the internet via WiFi somewhere as having internet access? There is no way that 27% reflects a broadband internet connection in the home that is capable of video streaming. That number has got to be in the low single digits. Now, if Netflix is looking at getting their service into hotels and resorts, that does make some sense but getting it into Cuban homes in any substantial numbers a long way off IMO.

The union of online poker games also opened up to Cuba. Any of the 25 million plus (estimated – by them) Cubans with an international credit card and at least a 15 MB broadband connection can now play poker online at home and on their smartphones in the guagua (because AT&T are setting up 20 MB WiFi in all the public busses in Cuba if you didn’t catch that one).In fact pokerstars.com announced they are moving headquarters to Cuba. Being Americans, they’re not dumb mind you, so it didn’t take them long to look at a map and find the glitziest, most glamorous, most neon-lit spot in all of Cuba to do so.

So now you know what that 80 floor skyscraper in Santiago de las Vegas south of Havana is all about.

Netflix launching in Cuba is only slightly less surprising than DT posting on Debbie’s. Wonders will never cease! (glad to see you here, DT)

Very interesting to Google "Look who’s here – God’s gift to warthogs" and see what is listed first, definitely the Group W Bench.

Thank you all for the warm welcome.

And especially to eeeefarm #12 that was funny 🙂 I saw some comments of yours about me here, so whether you are really glad to see me, I am not sure, but it takes a big woman to love someone you hate 🙂

Careful, DT, people are going to suspect!

Tranquila mamita. You have always been one of my most respected arch-enemies. One never caught reporting and calling the moderators por gusto and always arguing her case instead of just name-calling. If we were Cubans, we would be in love, I promise, what with the amount of heat and tension we’ve always had 🙂

That could be next Netflix hit in Cuba!!! Romantic comedy! Would be more popular than "Día y noche"

Guess I should start writing the screenplay!
So how about Netflix launching in Cuba??!….lol

I think my thread got hijacked by the "New member Don Tomas" thread…or wait, is that a seperate thread/topic on here…I am confused

So how about Netflix launching in Cuba…. It is much less interesting than the arrival of Don Thomas.

Perhaps so, but there is a seperate thread for that already on here…and as I have stated before on here, if we want people to use this site for actually getting info and learning about Cuba, when they click on the topic they are interested in, thats what the topic should be about. Not a welcoming party for someone that only the few "orginals" on here know and adds no value to the thread. That will make people feel excluded and use other sites for their information…which previously almost lead to the demise of this site.

Not being rude, but sometimes the truth needs to be said and truth often hurts.
