We rented our vacation condo in Belize on Ambergris Island through Steve Bagnall and VRBO. We were very pleased with the accomodations and working with Steve and his onsite manager Kenny. The 2nd floor condo is absolutely gorgeous, (very nicely decorated) very new. Fully equipped kitchen with wonderful stove, fridge and microwave. The blender came in handy for pina coladas and the toaster was nice too. There is no dining room, but the island in the kitchen has stools so there is enough room for 4 to sit and eat comfortably. The living room has one of the most comfortable couches that I have ever sat on. Two coffee tables at each end and a larger one in front of the couch. Large area rug on the tile floor. The televison is amazing, great color and full satellite- movie channels and even MTV (hard to believe we could get that many channels on vacation- nice to use at night). We did find an assortment of DVD’s but no DVD player as listed (not sure what happened to the DVD player). There was a boom box, with radio and the ability to use a CD. Sliding glass doors off of the living room go out to the balcony. The condo unit has three air conditioning units, one in the living room and one in each bedroom along with ceiling fans in each bedroom, the living room, kitchen and yes even in each bathroom. We were never too warm and often had to turn the air down at night as we would get too cold. The balcony faces the pool and ocean, has a hammock and two chairs (sliding door from living room goes out to balcony as does french doors from master bedroom). I spent many mornings sitting outside on the balcony reading before anyone was awake. Having a washer/dryer in the condo was great. We did not think we would need them but it sure was nice for damp towels to dry them in a warm dryer. The condo had a large supply of very very nice towels and even beach towels, a very nice perk. Both bedrooms (master with a king) and the other bedroom (with a queen) have air beds where each side can be inflated to your own liking. I have never slept in those kind of beds before but were pleasantly suprised how wonderful they were. The sheets were very high quality as were the pillows. Felt like we were in a very upscale hotel. The master bedroom had a nightstand (with large drawer) on one side with lamp (great for reading) and a dresser with four drawers that fit nicely under the bed. There was another type of nightstand on the other side of the bed with a huge drawer. In other words we had plenty of room for our clothes to be taken out of the suitcases. In the other bedroom was a huge armoire, that could hold hanging clothes and had two large drawers underneath for clothes. A nightstand on one side of the bed with lamp and a two large drawers. Under the bed was a laundry basket that turned out to be very helpful in keeping teenage dirty clothes in one place. The two bathrooms were incredible. Marble and beautiful tile work. The master bath has a lot of counter space, toilet and a great whirlpool tub that my daughter used.Huge mirrors and enough electrical outlets for your curing irons, straighteners or hair dryers. (there was a hair dryer in the condo and a curling iron). The whirlpool tub did have a shower above, but we were afraid with no shower curtain we would get water all over. The other bathroom with toilet, had a wonderful, huge walk in shower, could possibly fit three people. A nice vanity with big mirror too. The bathrooms were top of the line, nicely decorated and again like staying in a posh resort or hotel. Having large ceiling fans in the bathroom was very nice, keeps your mirrors from getting fogged up. A broom closet in the kitchen held cleaning supplies and brooms. A lot of sand is brought up into the unit daily as all the streets are sand. We sweeped many times a day, but that was easy with beautiful tile floors. Having a second floor unit was very nice, quiter and we felt very safe. The grounds are very nice and the pool was amazing. There is an outdoor shower by the pool, and plenty of lounges. The grill is incredible, gas and huge. We cooked out there many evenings with food we bought at the many grocery stores on the island. (Kenny can tell you which ones have better prices). WE even found a fish market that sells caught fish from that morning, and grilled outside. The condo unit was virtually empty. We met one family from Alanta that are having a top floor unit built, they were gone after our third day. There was another man from Houston that we saw once or twice. We really did have the unit and pool to ourselves. The beach was another 30-50 feet down from the pool. The beaches are gorgeous but there is sea grass (they call it eel grass/turtle grass) all over. You have too look hard to find a bright blue spot where there is just sand underneath and not eel grass. There is virtually no place or resort that has a nice sand beach where there is not grass. Sure the beach itself is nice but once you wade into the water you encounter grass. WE still found some great beach area close to shore going up north to Captain Morgans resort. (Most resorts were very accomodating if we wanted to use their pools. Because of the US economy, the resorts were not full so the employees would want you to use their pool, restaurants to check out their resort for future use.) All in all the condo unit was above our expectations. We payed a deposit (half of the amount) and then the rest 30 days before our trip.Steve the condo owner answered all of our questions or he referred us to Kendrick (Kenny) Smith his onsite manager. Kenny picked us up from the airport in golf carts, took us to the condo and gave us a cell phone so we could get a hold of him or have him arrange excursions for us. He also checked in with us daily to see if we needed anything or to answer questions. Kenny set us up with people to fish with (his friends that were wonderful and way cheaper than the commercial outfitters- they even made supper for us at the condo by the pool on the grill. As Kenny about his friend Carlos- he took us out to Hol Chan to snorkel. Carlos was an incredible guide- inexpensive and told us all about the history of Ambergris and Belize. He also knew every kind of fish in that ocean, held a stingray for us to pet and we watched him and helped him feed a 3 foot grouper that acted like a big dog. Kenny also arranged for our trip back to the airport at the end of the week. For those of you that are worried about the location of the condo being north- don’t be. It is just over the bridge a few blocks. Kenny gave us a pass so that we would not have to pay each time we crossed the bridge. South is more populated, and although the roads are nicer, I liked the north end better. You are still very close to the downtown area to be able to go into town as often as you like. Steve set us up with a golf cart from Castle carts, the only way to go. The carts are nice, the people very easy to work with at Castle. Steve convinced us to rent the golf cart for the week and he was right. He also made our reservations for us to take Maya Air from Belize City to Ambergris. We had hoped to take the ferry back, but I found it was not worth the 1 hour and 45 minutes by water (you never know about weather or how rough the seas will be if it is windy). The flights leave every hour, only a 15 minute flight and very beautiful. My daughter got to sit up with the pilot (16 passenger plane). The flight costs around 52.00. If you wait and get your return flight once you are on the island, you save 20% for cash. There is no break if you buy a two way vs a one way ticket, same price. There is another airline Tropic air, but Maya air seemed to have more flights and were busier. For more questions feel free to email me at Dclarson@cableone.net. Stay with Steve at VBRO Bermuda Beach, you will not be dissapointed!
