If your not looking for 5 star luxury then the Pernik offers great value for money. The hotel not situated right in the centre is only a 25 minute walk to the Central Square, or take a bici-taxi for 1 1/2 cuc. Overall this Hotel offers basic accommodation at great value for money.
Room Number:
365
Arrival:
Check-in was easy, if you book by email have a spare copy of your reservation as Reception need one for their paperwork!
Rooms:
The room I stayed in had recently been refurbished and was clean. Not all rooms have balcony’s and it’s worth asking for one with one. There is a/c although I did not use it really as in the winter they don’t get that hot. The bathrooms have only showers and you have to get your timing right for the hot water, mornings were ok, but it never seemed to get hot before 6pm.
Restaurants and Bars:
Breakfast was included in my stay and was adequate. There is a bar and snack bar area by the pool with a limited menu but again is adequate. Service as with most government run hotels and restaurants can be very hit and miss. They do offer an evening buffet for 12 cuc per person, but again don’t expect fancy menus.
Beach/Pools/Grounds:
The pool area had a mixture of old and new sunbeds, with music. The pool was clean. The grounds are fairly well maintained.
Activities on and off the Resort/Hotel:
If you are planning to hire a car there is a place at the entrance to the hotel, but my advice is book in advance as they never seem to know when they are going to have a car!
Other Comments:
The great benefit of this hotel is that if you want a the real Cuban experience of some great evenings out with the locals in the central square then this is perfect. You only ever get what you pay for in this world so although it’s basic and clean this hotel isn’t the Ritz, but don’t let that put you off, as value for money it comes out 5 star. Things have changed in Cuba and now you will find a few more private local restaurants and these offer great value for money and good food. Try the restaurant 1910 at 143 Calle Martires in the central area. Go hungry as the portions are large. Also the best Mojitos you’ve tasted!
