My favorite activity during a stay at Playa Cofresi must be going on an early morning stroll along the mile-long golden sand beach. The only people I encounter at this time of the day are the locals who clean up the beach and the beach vendors who are joking around with each other while preparing for a day under the Dominican sun. Playa Cofresi is just minutes away from Puerto Plata, which allows for easy day tripping in case you want to leave the all-inclusive resort environment. The nearby Ocean World Marine & Water Park is very popular among families travelling with children but I prefer some of the other fun and – in most cases – more affordable excursion options like taking the Puerto Plata gondola to the top of Mount Isabel de Torres. more…
Cofresi is named after Captain Roberto Cofresi, an overly romanticized, ruthless pirate who gained his maritime Robin Hood reputation by giving some of his booty to the poor who in return offered him shelter from the Spanish authorities. The small fishing village has benefited considerably from recent developments that have transformed the low-key area into a tropical paradise. I can’t get enough of the panorama of Cofresi bay with its deep blue and green turquoise waters, which is just one of many magnificent ocean and mountain views that can be obtained in the area. Another natural treasure and national monument I visited is Bahia Maimon where I enjoyed the awesome beach, discovered a little beach market and sat in the sand with an ice cold beer. Everywhere on the north coast of the Dominican Republic you will find a seemingly endless amount of excursion and tourist attractions. The facilities of the much larger town Puerto Plata, are easily accessible for those who opted to stay in the more quiet, intimate and laid back environment offered by Playa Cofresi. I found my self-made excursion to the Puerto Plata town center and the top of Mount Isabel de Torres very exciting. Ocean World Marine & Water Park remains the main Playa Cofresi tourist attraction but I did not feel like going there. Instead, I decided to try the zip lining tour with Yasika Adventures, a fantastic experience. At first I felt a bit shaky but after the first “Zip” I just wanted to go on and on! Los Mangos golf club in Costamar is a fun and a non-intimidating golf course for both novices as well as intermediate players. It had been a while since I tried to swing a golf club and I must say that after playing nine holes I felt rather proud of myself since I only lost 3 golf balls!
How to get there
The best airport to fly to is Gregorio Luperón International Airport near Puerto Plata. From here it is easy to travel the 28 kilometers (18 miles) to Cofresi by taxi or airport transfer. Santiago’s Cibao International Airport is located about an hour south from Puerto Plata.

Tours and excursions
The Ocean World Marine & Water Park is the main attraction in Cofresi and attracts massive amounts of tourists. Rancho Lorilar is a popular Canadian owned ranch that offers half day, full day and private horse riding experiences while Yasika Adventures offers exciting Zip lining tours.
Most towns on the north coast of the Dominican Republic are located within close distance to each other, making it easy to discover the distinctly different towns like Sosua, Cabarete and of course the neighboring town Puerto Plata that offers better shopping and a fun gondola tour to the top of Mount Isabel de Torres where spectacular views await you. A Glass bottom boat tour leaving from Sosua allows you to get a glimpse at the underwater world of Sosua Bay.
