We are leaving for Punta Cana on Saturday, and the weather forecast looks horrible. I even checked several different websites, hoping for a better forecast from one of them. They all say either showers or thunderstorms (60% chance) for every day we are there! Ugh. So my question is this for all of you who go there a lot: in your experience, when it says a high chance of rain, does this mean all day or just a quick shower here and there? I’m just hoping we get a little sun….
ps: thanks for all your help with my other questions, too.

At this time of year when we have been there it did rain, however usually in the evening or early morning.

Brief squalls/showers are common. But they usually only last 10-15 minutes. So, the weather guessers have to use that word in the forecast. I wouldn’t worry about it a whole lot. Unless the weather is unusual, you shouldn’t see many all day rains. And even then, all the bars and restaurants are still open ….

Sorry to say but we were in Punta Cana last week and had terrible weather. Cloudy and heavy rain one day but the rest of the days were cloudy with light showers. Very little sun except the day we were leaving. We were very disappointed and I would not go back again at this time. Our friends were in Mexico the same week and had 7 days of sun. Also friends in Cuba the same time – 7 days of sun. I really hope you get sun because its so upsetting when you pay for sun and heat and you get rain and humid weather. Good luck. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you.

I’ve been in PC about five times at this time of year and not once did a drop of rain fall. It is just like anywhere, you take your chances and absolutely NOBODY can state for a fact that it will or will not rain at any time of the year. IMHO of course

I was in PC last week also (Apr. 21-28) and it was overcast with the odd sunny break followed by downpours for the first 2 days. The third day was cloudy with sunny periods with the odd light shower and the rest of the week was sunny with cloudy periods. On our bus back to the airport on Saturday, a couple from another resort further down the beach complained of rain all week also. This really surprised us. I guess we were lucky as to where our hotel was situated.

May is one of the "wetter" months but it rarely rains all day. Our first time down to the DR was in May 2000 (been back every year since and returning June 16th) and even though we had some rain in the evenings and most days were a little overcast, we still got great tans and had a great time . Don’t let the forecasts get to you, they’re no more accurate there than for here (probibly less so, sites like weatherunderground seem to call for rain every day no matter what month it is!). Hey, but if it does happen to rain, rush to the ocean/pool, you can only get wet once!

We were in PC April 16-22. Two days of torrential downpours (first and last day) and intermittent showers / sun / clouds all the days in between. :-/
The weather reports are pretty accurate when you are down there. Our resort posted the weather forecast daily.
Needless to say we didn’t come back with much in the way of tans.
But, you’re on vacation, in Punta Cana and it’s a "warm rain". There’s not much you can do about the weather so just go and have a good time. :-*
