:DCuba. U.S. bypasses embargo, sells food to Havana Some good newsBypassing its trade embargo on communist Cuba, the United States yesterday announced $250 million in "farm sales" to Havana after hurricanes Gustav and Ike devastated Cuba’s crops. The licences for agricultural sales, which include food and construction materials, were approved after Ike lashed Cuba a week ago and "wood, a material essential to rebuilding, is included," read a State Department memo delivered to reporters at the U.S. Interests Section in Havana.State Department officials in Washington on Monday said they regretted that Cuba rejected up to $5 million in aid for the hurricane victims.

Believe it or not (this suprised me) on the news yesterday it actually said Hurricain Season officially is at its peak in 3 days (hence my comment)HOWEVER – I know what your thinking – they could be wrongwellYou could be right.
Was just reporting from the news. I just hope that things start to improve for Cuba. |
|
Another 3 days before the hurricain season is actually in full swing – current situation from Reuters![]() Ike weakened to a Category 2 storm with 100 mph (160 kph) after roaring ashore in northeastern Cuba late on Sunday near Punta Lucrecia, about 510 miles southeast of Havana. At 11 a.m. (1500 GMT), Ike was 45 miles west-southwest of Camaguey, Cuba, heading west at 14 mph (23 kph), the U.S. National Hurricane Center said, adding that Cuba could see up to 20 inches of rain. Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, who has taken to writing columns since handing over power to his brother Raul, wrote on Sunday that the flow of international aid to Cuba since Gustav showed that it had many friends who wanted to help. Here’s hoping things start to improve |

Just spoken to Sunwing – all is ok – while they have used Zoom for some of their destinations I have been told today that they will use another carrier and that its only certain routes that would be effected. I even asked how their company was doing – I’m sure they told me the truth and said they were just fine and passengers had no need to worry at all……..pheeeeeeeeewYup off to Melia Las Americas 4th October flying from MontrealI can’t wait
I wondered if there would be a ripple effect – we go with Sunwing to Cuba in October and I have to say I’m feeling a bit nervous. Please update us – this is really useful informationCheers

Have been to breezes 4 times – first 3 were fantastic – the last time we went was 2 years ago and I have to be honest I was rather dissapointed with the condidtion of the hotel – ALTHOUGH I will say we always enjoy whever we go and are not complainers – it just needed some updating and we had alot of boozers (and believe me we like a drink to) also maybe the tide changed but alot of seaweed brought in by the tide – they do clear the beach EVERY morning before you venture down and the staff are 90% very good.Took a wonderful trip to Rose Island would go there a million times – also went to cabbage beach – which I loved CLEAr BLUE water and pina coladas in a coconut – the bestif its 4 days I’m sure it will be fine.

Just a warning today Zoon Airlinesannounced it is seeking creditor protection because of "acutely difficult" trading conditions in the airline industry. But in a statement, the company said it will continue to operate its routes between Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.
I belive some people have already been stranded and while they say they will continue to operate they have not been paying their bills – anyone booked with them or thinking of booking ensure you ahve your insurance and keep your eyes open on updated news. |

Pheeeeeew thanks so much – after reading this link at first I can’t even type what was going through my head lol – and your right – you make your own holiday what it is – as for the somewhat exaggerated posts – please think of us worry worts and try and put in perspective – the thought of 60 yer old females with young 17/18 year old boys blew my mind (I was brought up in a convent after all) and NO I’m no nun……….lolThanks for the reassurances I feel much better and am back to being OVER excited about our trip in October………………

Thanks for your comments ratherbeonthebeach (so wouldI)Regarding the golf – as I’m a fair weather golfer and don’t play often – I think it would be silly not to have a game or two while I’m there (do they rent golf clubs)? might save me bringing mine over.As for it being a low key resort 40ish plus – thats fine with me as I’m also in my forties (and hanging on to them)lol and hubby is in his early 50’s – we always havea great time wherever we go so I’m not worried – I think going with a good attiude makes a big difference, if you don’t want problems – don’t look for them.Just a note – I noticed your been on three cruises – I went on my first last year to Alaska – its a must – ABSOLUTLEY FANTASTIC.I read your full feedback thanks for the link it was very worthwhileCheers

???Hi we are flying to Cuba via Sunwing – has anyone flown with them before – would like to get some idea of how small the seating space is and if its worth paying to upgrade to a roomier seat? Our flight is 7.30 in the evening. So sitting for 4 hours will be a challenge in itself. All comments/tips appreciated
