We are going to La Ceiba, Honduras in a week and was wondering what is appropriate to leave for the maid for tips and "small gifts". What kind of things are considered an insult.
Thanks
Hola Abbyj
Have a great vacation in Honduras.
As for tips and gifts…. anything you leave in the way of money and or gifts will be greatly appreciated.Honduras is a very, very poor Country and everyone seems to be in need of everything.I personally do not that feel that any items left behind as a gift would be inappropriate or an insult. In February I brought everything to Honduras from sanitary products, hygiene supplies, clothes, shoes, household articles, Coleman water jugs, iron, coffee makers, hair styling accessories, school supplies, right down to items to do repairs in their houses etc…..Hair beads are also a good idea. Some of the women braid hair for the tourists so the beads can come in handy to them.Nail polish, hair accessories, small soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, balloons, pen’s, pencil’s, makeup, gently used clothes or shoes, candies, combs, Frisbees, balls and gloves, children’s books (I had loads of kids ask me for books when I was handing out candy).Anything you can find around the house that you will not be using and you have room for in your suitcase, bring it. Give it to the maids or someone on the street and they will keep it, or distribute it but it will not go to waste.Every single person I gave anything to was grateful and thankful for it, no matter what it was, big or small, expensive or inexpensive.
There is nothing better than seeing someones eyes light up and a smile across their face when you have given them something. It is worth a million dollars to me to see the look in their eyes and on their face.
Have a great vacation in Honduras.
