Regarding delays, the hotel porters are in touch with their buddies at the airport. They know if a flight is late 3 hours before arrival (or about 2 minutes after departure from YYZ).
We use the VIP lounge at the Cuban airport just in case.

Well see, I never would of imagined they wouldn’t of had wifi… so thanks. So, I guess there is no option to check-in online or hook-up to a website to see delays regarding delays either then. Cuba is a very poor country with one of the worst telecommunication infrastructures in the world. For a country that receives so many tourists Cubans are one of the lowest internet connected populations on the planet. It wasn’t so long ago that there was zero WiFi anywhere – including the 5 star resorts and top business hotels in Havana. Even Skype is still banned!Cheers,Terry |

As a visitor, I just love being disconnected. Obviously 99% of the Cuban population would disagree with me, so perhaps they should work on connecting the residential areas first. |

If the delay is at YYZ it could mean an expensive beer tab. If the delay is in Cuba it’s not too bad. Even at "airport prices" Cristal is still quite affordable.
We always have a deck of playing cards handy so we could play some cards to pass the time. The wife is a chatterbox and she will most likely start talking to the people around her. We’ve met some very nice people in the past that way….

Now that my son has learned to play Yahtzee and enjoys it, I’ll be sure to pack it in our carry-on, it would be a perfect way to pass the time during a delay!

Anne: you should teach your son how to play Dominoes. I got quite addicted to it. Gave a game to my grandson and taught him; a few weeks later I found him playing with them but he was making stacks that would hopefully fall in a prescribed pattern (hah hah). He’s back now to playing the real game.

He’s back now to playing the real game. If you really want to get hooked on Domino’s then get yourself Domino’s Double. The dots go up to 15. More or less the same rules but it’s a lot of fun!We also like to play Apples to Apples with the entertainment staff. It’s sometimes hillarious to see the stuff they come up with! |

Dominoes is a great suggestion! The game is extremely popular and seems to be played everywhere in Cuba. I found it to be very popular in Jamaica as well. Is this the case on other Caribbean Islands?

It is popular throughout the Caribbean. There are many different games played with dominoes c/w betting or not. I suspect it’s popularity is related to what the humidity does to a deck of cards. |

I ordered plastic (PVC) playing cards to take to Cuba. Will see how they work out. I might test them in the hot tub before we go |

Hey Blixem – I have the 15’s. But nobody will play with me. And I DO NOT cheat!

He has a set of dominoes, but they’re quite heavy… and I don’t know how to play dominoes! Guess I’ll have to learn, I love playing games like that with my son! |

Bought our first set of hand made dominoes at Tryp Cayo Coco one rainy January in 2000 when my son was 5. They were a lifesaver. He loved playing and he and my husband would spend all afternoon in the lobby playing with other people.

Hand made dominoes can vary quite a bit in quality. Look first at the backs for a more uniform and consistent colour. Notice how these guys only select the "non-distinct" looking tiles. They both already know what the darker, odd grained ones are. Playing partners against them could be costly with a "marked deck"

I always bring a book and make sure that I have some CUC left over when I enter the departure section. But it is maddening as those departure areas can get quite crowded and stuffy. |
