As question said here what was the most risky thing that you have ever done while you were in Cuba? One of the risky things that I have done is Skydiving in Varadero Cuba. I always wanted to try Skydiving and I had a chance to do it in Varadero and I am so happy I did it. For me it was very risky as we boarded on the big military Russian helicopter and we went sooo high and I jump from 3000m using a two-harness parachute with an instructor strapped in tandem. Once we were so high I realized how Varadero peninsula is so small and I realized how risky this jump is. But I did not have choice and I said now or never ![]() ![]() |

I took pictures of police on the beach and was detained for about 30 minutes. On another trip, I rode The Flying Inflatable Boat. Awesome!!The one thing I checked AFTER the flight was the weight limit of the contraption. Total weight limit was 125 kg. I’m about 3kg over that. Good thing the pilot was weightless. | |
Probably walking the beach for two hours east of Playa Blanca (then Barcelo) without telling anyone where I was bound. That or snorkelling solo at Punta Mal Tiempo when nobody was around. I didn’t consider either risky at the time, but in retrospect if I had turned an ankle or similar on that walk it might have been a long time before any help came my way (I saw nobody past the first hour of my walk), and it’s a pretty dry and hot place to be. The snorkelling was less risky.

![]() First time I went to Varadero Cuba I saw 2 policemen and I asked them if I can have photo with them and they answered: " No posible! " short and to the point. |

Nothing as exotic as skydiving, snokeling or parasailing, but I did something that was risky, and in retrospect, stupid.Varadero, around 10 a.m., scorching sun, four of us took was began as a meander and turned out to be a trek from the tip of the peninsula to just beyond the Iberostar Varadero without hats, sandals… or water. BAD IDEA. We did manage to make it back in one piece, but we were all seriously dehydrated and our feet were sore from walking some distance on a burning rocky path between the Paradisus and IVaradero. I also returned in full hypoglycemic mode, with "a whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on".
We did stop at the IVaradero beach bar to ask for water, but the bartender refused to serve us (won’t be forgetting his face anytime soon). |

The riskiest thing we ever did, and still do every time we go to Cuba…
Go without bringing any condiments (Ketchup or Mustard), Peanutbutter, Hot Sauce… etc… We like to live life on the edge and experience everything Cuban ~ in it’s own natural beauty!!! |

While snorkeling in Cayo Largo 2 very large baracudas were showing a great interest in me. Until I realized they were looking at the bright yellow and chrome underwater camera that was on my wrist. I made it to shore in record time with the camera tucked in underneath me! |

![]() I hope you had the presence of mind to take pictures before you made your retreat!! ![]() |

I had an interesting Barracuda experience at Cayo Largo in murky water. I tried snorkelling, couldn’t see a thing. Then the water cleared just a smidge, I looked down, and here is what I saw (full frame, no zoom) directly underneath me:
I snapped the shot and then he disappeared into the murk. I decided to call it a day. Later I cleaned the shot up a bit on the computer. |

![]() Oh, you just jogged my memory!!!We had a very similar type of experience at RH Ensenachos! It was end of July, and most mornings we spent on Playa Ensenachos for an hour or two enjoying absolute & complete solitude. Although we weren’t always alone -> We had a special welcome a few mornings, by the resident barracudas who would float a few metres from us in the shallow warm water, and then swim off. They were at least a metre in length, and really were a shock to see the first time they greeted us (who needs a jolt of coffee to wake up, when you are shocked to see these in the water with you?)

Great shot of the baracuda! Not a nice feeling if you are in their backyard and they are circling around you looking at you with their beady little eyes… Luckily I had some beverages of a sociable nature at the shore so I could recouperate! |

![]() I wish I had had some, but I was at Punta Mal Tiempo, with a long walk ahead of me before I could sit down and enjoy a cold one! ![]() |

I love it! My buddy and I would have been happy to sit next to each other in a cell. We really wanted to keep the photos we had taken so I took off with the camera with the pictures on it and took another one of Bigjohn and the Police on my way down the path. Most of the Police in the Guardalavaca area are quite nice but that night some of the Police watching the disco/beach area were not so friendly.Freedom Ryder 8-)………. |

Both our risky adventures both involved scuba diving… which is always risky, no matter where you go. That’s why you get training. Well, the first time we ever tried diving was in 2005 in Cayo Santa Maria. We did the 1 hour pool thing and the next day went diving. One of the instructors hurt himself earlier impressing a cute girl by hauling multiple tanks of air around, so it was just 1 guide for 5 UNcertified divers, 3 of whom claimed to be experienced. We went to 25m on the first dive and 15m on the second. One of the "experienced" divers kept kicking the regulator out of my buddy’s mouth and we had never been taught how to clear the regs. When we were entering the water the same guy didn’t watch to make sure it was safe and jumped onto my head. They had no concept of signals or buoyancy control and kept touching everything and kicking sand at us on the bottom. At one point the guide left us alone at the bottom when he took the other three into a cave. I did have a moment of near panic when I realized how far down we were all by ourselves, but I realized that if I panicked I would die. So I didn’t. Despite it all, we remained calm and had a blast that day, but when we returned to Canada we took the NAUI course and realized how risky what we had been doing was.
The other time involved barracudas. My partner was doing some shallow diving at Jibacoa without me. It was just him and the dive master Frank. They were feeding the yellow tail snapper. All of a sudden, a barracuda started coming very quickly, straight toward them. Brad’s first thought was that Frank was between him and the predator, so he would be safe because Frank would get eaten first. The barracuda went right past their heads, touching Brad’s cheek, and went for the school of snapper. The moral of that story is not to feed the fish while diving. Ever. Theresa |
