The various modes of transportation have always fascinated me. So many strange and ingenious contraptions! The most frightening are the bicycle sidecars with elderly women in the side seat clutching groceries and packages while the young man weaves through heavy traffic. I’ve seen this in downtown Santa Clara and Holguin and it really made me cringe!

I once saw a bike with a woman riding on the cross bars holding what looked like an elaborate birthday cake, while the cyclist was weaving in and out avoiding buses and pot holes! Thought it would good to follow them and see if the cake made it home, but we were on a tour bus so the driver wouldn’t do it (haha). We didn’t ask him if he would but wow! And how about the Yellow Jackets, who just pull you over and say you have room in your car, taxi, whatever – so take this person too! Haven’t seen them for a while, hope they are still operating.

First 1997 trip wow moment in Cuba was driving around with a Cuban construction supervisor in his 1955 Ford car. He lifted the hood and showed the Russian 4 cylinder diesel and 4 speed transmission that had been harvested out of a wrecked Russian Gaz jeep, car worked awesome.

That yellow buoy thing on the beach between Sirena and Paraisio on Cayo Largo. What is it and how did it get there? That thing must weigh a few tons Do you mean this???

Just from the photos: It looks like an ocean buoy that was a marker or navigational aid. A big storm threw it up on the beach. By the appearance of it, it wasn’t in the water long before it broke free of the mooring or maybe even fell off a ship on the way to being placed. Imagine the power of the waves that day!

@ SundOg… I think beansntoast "nailed" it.
It could even have been Hurricane Michelle November 4, 2001… apparently that was quite a powerful stormĀ You can read the details here:

The power of nature is scary. In 2012 we experienced a tropical storm, maybe a Cat 1 hurricane. We had one of the front bungalows and the force with which the rain hit the windows was quite impressive. Palm trees were almost touching the ground!

Cubans really can keep things running by inventing spare parts. How many times we would throw things because it doesn’t work anymore and is more expensive to fix than to buy a new one. That is amazing! |

The strangest thing….. the little gear head that runs around Havana on a bicycle operated with a chainsaw motor. I heard him coming for three blocks and could not figure out who would have a chainsaw in Havana. Seconds later, the kid flashed past me at the speed of light and was just flying down Neptuno. I think Terry has seen him too.
