…..do people add comments to threads when they don’t like the topic or the OP and have nothing to say except to complain about the topic and/or the OP? If I wasn’t interested in a topic, or knew from experience that a specific member’s posts always irritated me, I think I would just avoid looking at them. Of course, some people do enjoy complaining, and that can be positive reinforcement all on its own.
Another forum I participate in has an "ignore" function, where you simply don’t see the posts of a member you have selected to ignore. Since people don’t seem to be able to refrain from looking, perhaps that ability could be added to this forum, to keep everyone happy?

If this feature can be added, I’ll go out on a limb and say that those who should use it probably won’t.

Please Please Please add a ignore button…I would be putting it to good use on this form lately.
the amount of nonsense is truly uncalled for……its beyond annnoying now thanks to a certain poster who posts and spews eratic posts and is clogging the board of good information..

But you didn’t answer the question posed in my original post! In absence of an "ignore" button, perhaps it might be possible to just refrain from reading threads started by someone whose posts you do not enjoy. That way, you would save yourself the trouble of responding to them. Or perhaps you are bucking for a moderator position? |

If you don’t want to have to read all the posts, don’t become a moderator, LOL There are a few members on other forums that I almost never read because I don’t jive with their attitude, style or politics.
Life’s too short.

Zinnnngggggg..,@ # 2, this whole thread went right over your head, didn’t it.,lol Not at all..I get the point that eeeefarm is making and totally disagree with her point of view. There is one poster on this site that drives many people crazy and is toxic to this site.If something is not done about it, i predict that it won’t be long until this board is back to where it was a year or so ago….very few people using/reading/looking at this site.As a someone who has been here for years Wingnut1, I know what I am talking about. If you think i don’t, pleae take the time to educate yourself and go back and look at my posts over the past 10 years or so here on the Cuban and Dominican form.
Also, pretty ironic that my post here in reply to the OP’s post here in the "off topic" form would at all be critized…that is the whole point of the off topic form…can say whatever I want, I could say blue, truck, car, it, food, music and really that would be fine in off topic(and makes more sense than some of the messages in the Cuba general board)……now if only others would start posting their nonsense on this section of the board….

Yup, and so can the people who want to criticize your post!
Incidentally, I don’t think one person’s posts had anything to do with this board losing popularity. The consensus was that heavy handed moderation took its toll. There are sure lots of inane threads on Trip Advisor and it keeps rolling along, but mostly people just don’t respond to the dumber ones, or they turn them into entertainment with inventive responses. That might be a more interesting way to respond to something one doesn’t like or agree with.

Please Please Please add a ignore button…I would be putting it to good use on this form lately. You don’t need a button. Choose not to add to the post’s "number of views" and satisfy/reinforce the poster’s ego.In other words, "Don’t feed the trolls". |
|
|
|
Related, I would prefer to see the original poster’s name in the "created by" column when mod’s move a thread to Off Topic

You don’t need a button. Choose not to add to the post’s "number of views" and satisfy/reinforce the poster’s ego. Yup, that’s most definitely the easiest solution!A little self control goes a long way in making the mod’s jobs easier and having some harmony in the forums. |

Well that poster is no longer here……so it’s back to normal around here…lol.

As far as I can tell, the member I think you are referring to is still an active member, just has not been posting lately. However, I did find something of interest. Check out this link. You don’t ever have to see another post by someone you don’t like. blocking memberHmmm, might be a useful tool! |

Thanks for bringing that link to our attention eeeefarm. Useful indeed!!I so wish that those members who didn’t have enough self control to ignore posts from members they didn’t want to be reading, had used it. Would have saved a lot of forum nonsense.I firmly believe in freedom of speech and the right for anyone to be a member here as long as no posting rules are broken. If someone wants to revoke their membership voluntarily, that’s a whole different issue and I respect their choice to do so.To my knowledge, two members have been banned since the revival of Debbie’s in February. Their memberships however appear to still be active. |

What is interesting is that people complain about threads, then proceed to run up the post count complaining on the thread! It’s also remarkable that so many have so much to say on some of these supposedly inane topics. If it doesn’t interest you, why would you even look? On Trip Advisor I ignore about 90% of posts, since they are repetitive and boring. Debbie’s doesn’t have so many to filter through, so it should be a snap to avoid anything likely to provoke boredom or irritation (unless, of course, you are looking for something to be irate about!)
(if encountering ridiculous posts is likely to shut down a forum, I am amazed that TA is still operating, since a large percentage of the threads started there are a waste of time. Sometimes the only reason to read is to try to decipher what the grammatically challenged OP is talking about!)

It’s also remarkable that so many have so much to say on some of these supposedly inane topics. If it doesn’t interest you, why would you even look? Exactly!!! You’ve hit the nail on the head! From my personal perspective, I really resent the fact that some vocal, complaining members with their own personal agendas (intolerance, immaturity, egos, short fuses, axes to grind, bad day, etc. – take your pick!) have taken away MY right to chose. A banned member can no longer post which means I can’t read or respond to their threads if I feel like doing so.I personally don’t need others to "filter" my information as I’m quite capable of making my own decisions and I definitely don’t appreciate a forum of "dictators" who feel they should be the ones to decide what’s good for me to spend my internet time on and what isn’t. Now that we know there is an ignore button feature, I’m inclined to think the two banned members should be reconsidered and invited back to Debbie’s under the proviso that they not break any forum posting rules or they’ll be gone for good. Those who wish, should set their ignore buttons immediately and have the self-control to not respond to any post or thread from these two members in the future.Comments or opinions from others most welcomed. I can take it! LOL!! |
