Why is Bahamas so crazy expensive???!!!! | Debbie's Caribbean Resort Reviews Forums

Why is it so expensive to stay in the Bahamas, or at least Nassau? And I am not talking about Atlantis, but ANY resort there? It’s more than Cuba, Jamaica, Mexico, D.R.Is it cause it’s English sepaking, or more Americanized or??

If anything, with Dunkin Donuts, McDonalds, and it being closer to North America that many other caribbean countries, I would think it should be cheaper!

Because it’s a quick hop from the US. Check out hotels/motels in Bahamas. We’ve been to Freeport and I thought it was very reasonable at the time. No meals or drinks but a huge selection of either always nearby. If you think that’s pricey, check out Bermuda.BTW, we tried KFC and it was grease that a chicken had walked through.
Yeah, i wont be going to Bermuda anytime soon, unless its a cruise and just visitng during the day.I just can’t beleive the prices in the Bahamas. But I guess being so close and easy access for Americans, makes it that way. Supply and demand at it’s best..or maybe worst…lol. For the price of a 1 week, basic AI in Nassau I could spend at least 2, maybe 3 vacation in Cuba….

I havwen’t tried KFC there yet..lol. But the McDonalds had a "chicken mac" which was pretty good…….haha

Bahamas are pretty well on par for $$ with most of the other former British islands. I think you are just hopelessly stuck on the super cheap prices in Cuba. DR and to some extent Mexican AI’s have lowered their $$ to compete with Cuba. It’s a race going down that all of us take advantage of. Prices in Mexico are lower than they were 3 years go but that may be in part due to the banditos everyone worries about. I’d do a post on my Mexican trip but I doubt anyone would read it on this forum, since most here are Cuban centric. When we go to ‘other’ destinations, we can’t afford an AI and usually try to find a hotel or villa with a free breakfast. Eat all you can at breakfast, a cheap snack mid-afternoon, then dinner later with very little alcohol, unless you buy the bottle. Actually, we’ve found renting a house/condo, etc. to be a great way to travel also, if you can stay in one place long enough.

The real question is, why would anyone go the Bahamas anyway? Chilly in winter, expensive, only an hour more to go to Cuba. Guess you found that out. I’m no expert, not returned since our trip 35 years ago.

Yes, I agree, I am spoiled with the deals I am able to find to the Caribbean, so everything else seems expensive. I guess its all relative. But I can travel cheaper to Cuba for a week, eat, drinks and enjoy the besach for a week, than just what I would pay for a flight back home to Nfld……..so go figure.I haven’t looked much into the travelling by renting house/casa etc and fending for myself when it comes to meals, booze etc. I travel mostly solo these days, so I guess I enjoy the conveience of having everything in the one place for me and hassle free.I visited the Bahamas last year on a cruise(just Nassau for the day) and enjoyed it. I am heading back this Jan for another cruise and will be spending a day in Nassau again. I enjoyed visiting Nassau, different feel and vibe to what I am used to. But once I looked into the cost of a week there(close to $3000) I realize this wont be happening anytime soon.

Will have to make the most of my 16hrs there this Jan I guess!

I was looking into a beach home rental and there are a huge amount on Emerald Bay but by the time you pay for the house and then your flight not to mention the food etc it’s way over board. Four bedroom house with all the bells is $8000 divide by 4 couples not too bad then roughly another $1000 for a flight pp then all the rest. Already at $4000 and then you add in your entertainment/food/booze. WOW do not think it’s going to happen. Wanted to just head there and fend for ourselves but at that rate staying at Sandals Emerald Bay looks like a deal. LOL Oh yes…no directs from here in NS only AC via Toronto which in reality you would want a overnight just to be sure you arrived on time without the NS flight being cancelled due to snow. So there would be even more.

Cuba it is!

Yes, it’s too bad that it’s so "expensive" to visit the Bahamas. There is lots I would like to see and do there. A week at a resort would be great. However a 3 day trip to Breezes out of Atlantic Canada(so really only about 2.5 days in Nassau..lol) is well over $1000 for 1 person…I guess I am going to have to cram what I can into my 16 hours in Nassau in Jan……

However I have booked a 2nd cruise for Feb, and will be back to Nassau again that way. It’s cheaper doing it that way than actually booking to stay in Nassau….lol

We went to Breezes Nassau in September for a 4 day 3 night and it cost us about $1200 taxes in for two from Toronto. Left Toronto at 6:30 am on the Thursaday and landed back in TO at 1 am, so we had a full 4 days there….

Sunwing has started direct flights from NS. Newly renovated memories AI in Freeport available for reasonable price. Of course 2 weeks is cheaper and keeping away from March break best.

Sunwing also started with direct flights out of Winnipeg to Bahamas for the winter of 2013/2014. Maybe way into the future I might have a thing to go there. I’ve talked to a few people already and they say it is a bit cooler in temperature than the other Caribbean countries.

I have been there in Jan and Feb…was about 28-30degrees plus humidex both times. Headed back again next week. I have been told that Nassau area anyways, keeps a pretty steady temp year round. Was warmer than Florida for sure when I was there last month.

I would think its pretty close to most places south I have been. Biggest difference I found was the humidty was not like Cuba or the DR.

the Memories resort is very close to opening, but they’re not there yet. My colleague just returned from Freeport 2 days ago and they were supposed to stay at Memories. What I’ve heard, they could use some bars and restaurants, but their rooms were next door (sorry, forgot the name of the resort next door)But they had a direct flight with Sunwing from Edmonton and apparently the price wasn’t too bad. More expensive than Mexico or Cuba for sure, but at least it’s something different too.

About renting a house/condo, that’s our preference when we travel (we don’t like to be ‘stuck’ at the resort), but it’s not always cheaper. It all depends on the country.

When I was in the Bahamas on a 3 night/4day AI at Paradise Island, I planned on going back and do a trip on the mailboats

mail boat  link doesn’t work  but you can Google it

Unfortunately got sidetracked & never made it back, yet!
