Paradise Island was once called Hog Island – one should petition the Bahamas government to change the name Nassau in Hog City. Atlantis has three buildings: Beach Tower and Coral Tower are the old once and Royal Tower is the new big one. From my point of view Paradise Island is already overpopulated. And more constructions are still going on. There are a lot of importet palm trees at the pool side but not even one at the beach for shade. Whereas it is too loud at the pool the disadvantage of the beach is the dirt. ![]("http://images.proboards.com/v5/smiley/cool.png") Atlantis room rates are very high. Same thing concerning the food. For a evening buffet you pay more than 100 box for two without drinks – and consider it is self service. Service does not reach always the level what you expect. Even if you have booked a stay at the Atlantis in the Royal Tower for 5 nights they might try to break our 5 night stay into 2 separate rooms with 3 in Royal Towers and 2 in Coral Towers at the arrival due to overbooking. You can have also various "mistaken" wakeup calls and "wrong" room service deliveries. Make shure that they do not double bill you and charge for mini bar that you never used. It can take months to straighten a part of the problems out. Over all our memories unfortunatelly are of hassle and lack of sleep…I even say that the Dollar has in the Bahamas a value of 50 cents only. Same thing with any excursions.I guess a cruise out into the ocean is not bad, but after getting into the water and above the reef it is really not very good at all. The coral appeared to be dead and fish were nonexistent. Very disapointingfor us and the other people who payed 40 dollars a head. The worst experience is a walk to the foot of the Paradise Island bridge. It stinks there from water and swerage tanks which are close by. It is also disappointing to see all the poor locals offering food at dirty stands and drinking canned beer. It seems that after sunset it can be also dangerous if you walk alone. OK, where many people are living there is crime, stealing and killing too but from my point of view the Bahamas is a small country with about 300 000 inhabitants. This means to me that the crime, stealing and killing rate should absolutely not so high like in New York or Moscow. I personally agree also that the US embassy even published not only once a travel warning at least for spring breakers. The Bahamas Government invest much money for false advertisements. We spoke to many tourists who would not return to the Bahamas. Another disappointment was a walking tour to Nassau downtown. On the way we did not see anyhing what could be interesting for us. And on the way back the taxi driver refused to turn his meter on and charged us 5 dollars PER PERSON for a short trip of one mile. Beside the Casino the nightlife is very poor. For the money you send at Atlantis you can easyly find other places in the Carribean.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. I spent 5 days there in December, and had the best vacation of my life. I am in the travel industry, and have traveled all over the world; especially the caribbean. Atlantis was amazing and it’s the first resort my husband and I ever said we really, really want to return to.We stayed in the Royal Tower, and the location was perfect. The service couldn’t have been better. Every single person we came into contact with was nice, helpful, and wonderful.Food is expensive, but you do need to buy the dining plan. The gourmet plan at $87 pp/per day is worth it and saves you lots of money in the long run. Dinner is more than $87 per person if you don’t buy the dining plan. They also have the modified plan that includes only the more casual restaurants, and it’s less $$ .I’m telling you…this place is heaven on earth, and we can’t wait to go back again and again and again.I never really cared for the Bahamas before, but this has completely changed my mind. It’s a short flight from Philadelphia, and it was the best time ever. I even went down the Leap of Faith verticle slide!!! |

Hello AllMy two cents worth: The Atlantis is all glitz and glamour, with very little hospitality or substance. Yes, there’s a casino and the grounds, for the most part, are attractive, but that isn’t enough (for me) to offset the overpriced rooms…food….etc. They seem to be striving to turn the place into a miniDisneyland, complete with those long lines! I’m sure the place has it’s admirers, but count me out! There are many resorts/hotels back on Cable Beach, with nearly as much glamour, and a much friendlier atmosphere. It’s an easy bus ride to downtown Nassau, or Paradise Island, for that matter. As to the crime situation, there is some! But then it’s all over! I’ve wondered around downtown Nassau, after dark, sober or otherwise, without a problem! Just lucky, maybe? If you book the Atlantis, you might as well resign yourself to staying there, your entire vacation. But, by doing so, you’ll miss out on the true beauty this island has to offer.Again, this is just my opinion!Regards, and have fun…whatever your choiceDave

I guess everyone has their opinion of a "dream" vacation and mine differs from JulieC’s. I’ve only ever seen Atlantis on TV travel shows and I only stay in Nassau when I can’t make connections to my chosen Bahamas Out Island! (Even then I’ve stayed away from the downtown hotels after the first trip!). $87/day for a meal plan???!!! That amount will buy me a ticket to Long Island and $30/day will feed me well and give me a couple of Kalik’s as well. And I don’t have to look at the ocean through a glass wall, I’ll be diving in it with my next $85/day! And when I go home, I’ll know I have truly seen the real Bahamas, not an artificial world created for the benefits of tourists. Paradise Island to me is like staying in downtown Toronto or Edmonton or Vancouver and saying you have seen Canada! Are the poor people you see there (in any big city downtown) truly representative of the people of the country? I’m not sure I even want to mention what you are missing on the beaches in the Out Islands!!!! But just my opinion.

Been there (7 nights), quite nice. Pools and rides were great. (lazy river & some Kool slides). If you have the money for a full meal plan, Get it!! It can get very expensive if you have to pay for all your meals. Rusty
