April 2003
my boyfriend and i stayed at club med in varadaro for two weeks in february. we had a great time, and would recommend the resort to others.
we are in our late twenties and were one of the younger couples at the club. we found club med to be very social, the only problem we had was that most of the guests were from quebec or europe, and not much english was spoken. (we are from vancouver)
Food – we love food!!! the food was pretty good. the main dining room is a buffet restaurant.(you sit at tables of eight) at breakfast they had an omelette station, fried eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, french toast etc…also fresh fruit, fresh breads, croissants etc…my favorite was the fresh orange juice machine… lunch was great, lots of salads, cheeses, breads, always pastas, fish, meats. lunch was the best meal in my opinion. dinner was good most of the time. every night had a theme.(french, italian etc..) sometimes there was a strange selection of things…but most of the time i found lots to eat..the great thing about club med being a french company is they have tons of wonderful fresh breads every day, and lots of cheeses. overall i’d give the food a 7 out of 10.
drinks – red, white and rose wine and beer were available at every meal. they always kept bringing more, which was great!! the rest of the day you are on your own to buy drinks from the bar with tickets. you have to buy a book of tickets from the front desk.. the system needs improvement. tickets are fine, but they take a different amount for the same drink every day, so you never know how much anything costs. anyway, we just bought huge bottles of water during the day, and drank beer/wine at meals. it worked out great….it was too hot to drink on the beach all day!
beach – definately the best feature of the club!! white sand, turquoise waters…..heaven. club med has a private beach with a rocky peninsula at each end, so there weren’t people from other resorts were walking by all the time. all the other hotels were packing in the beach chairs, with people everywhere, loud music etc.. our beach was quiet, everyone was spread out, never had problems finding a chair, even if we didn’t go down until 11am. lots of palapas too, if you like shade. after walking by all the other resorts, ours was the nicest for sure.
pool – nice pool. never busy. good temperature. apparantly it’s one of the bigger pools in varadero. we are more into the beach, but if you are a pool person, you’d be happy here.
sports – tons to do all day..spoke to some other people staying at "beaches", they wished they’d stayed at our resort because of the wide range of things to do. they have: circus school, archery, tennis courts, hobie cats, windsurfing, bocce ball, soccer, beach volleyball….i’m sure there’s more..but lot’s to do if you get a cloudy day.
overall i’d say we had a great vacation. staff friendly, beach great, food good, met great people, got a great tan…what more is there??
