	Well we do not yet have plans for a vacation ….with Indy having health problems we have put vacation plans on hold. …. But I found a great vacation gift(s). Canadian Tire has ‘ green’ bags. They are similar to the Loblaws bags but a bit bigger ….and only 69 cents each.I figure it is light – so easy to carry …lay flat so again easy to pack …. and very ‘green’ and look nice

	They are a great idea and I take a number of them down to give away. Sort of ties in with the "going greener" thread ;D

	A great suggestion indeed! I was planning on taking down a couple of bags from the Metro supermarket chain on my next trip… if only to have an easy way to hand out the baby clothes I bring for a friend!

martian Guest	I take my Mountain Equipment Co-op bag to the market all the time and all the ladies admire it. (They also think it’s funny that a gringo is out buying the produce.) They’re all mostly using old falling apart plastic bags so the big cloth bag is very desirable. Excellent suggestion.

	Hey Canucks, I’m sorry to hear your plans are on hold but hopefully not for long, right? The bags are such a great idea! I just bought some today and now I’ll have to go back. The other things I saw on sale today at Canadian Tire are the DOT iIT, self-adhesive, LED lights that you can stick anywhere. They are great in Cuba for power failures and long lasting.

We started taking down the reusable cloth bags a few trips back, and now collect them from various stores all through the year in anticipation of the next trip.The first time we gave one away it was filled with stuff for a friend and her kids, she asked very shyly if she could keep the bag and was more thrilled with that than the stuff inside ;DOur local Great Canadian Superstore just went completely plastic bag free so their cloth bags (made of recycled pop bottles) are 99 cents, buy one get the second one free…guess where I’m going this week? ;D

But I was told by another friend that plastic bags are greatly appreciated as people must supply their own bags for their ration of rice, beans, milk powder etc. Large Ziplocks are a good choice as they are sturdy and can be washed and reused for a very long time.

martian Guest	Much better than zip-lock bags for Libreta items (or anything else) are Tupperware-style plastic containers. They last much longer, seal better, easier to keep clean, etc.

	Just don’t buy "cheap" Tupperware where the lids won’t stay on or don’t fit after awhile, or the "hard" plastic ones which crack very quickly.

	I always take a collection of the green bags to place gifts in. The plastic lidded containers make a great gift and are handy for packing fragile items in on the way down. I also buy fabric ends during the year and make cloth gift bags with string ties. I was amused to see an employee coming off the bus with his work shoes in a bag I had made and gifted about five years ago. lol

We knit or crochet purses for the children and give them out at school, so they can use them to carry there school supplies.

	A little OT, but has anyone seen the wind up dynamo type flashlight, along with radio ?? seems to me they are geting a lot cheaper, LED lights that never fail. Picked a couple up at Home Depot less than $ 8.00 on sale. Great idea for a snow storm or a Cuba power outage.. ;D

I just wanted to add one other item I picked up to take down: a couple of those light, plastic cutting boards. I use them in my kitchen and they take up no weight in your suitcase.

	If you keep watch when shopping the wind up flashlights can now be found at grocery stores, canadian tire, home depot etc. I also picked up a couple at Marks Work Warehouse. Always scouting for sales lol. The light/radio combo are a great gift idea for home as well as Cuba.

	Great ideas, let’s keep this going, any suggestions for things we can take with us for our Cuban friends are helpful.

I picked up acouple of "shake" flashlights. Nothing to crank but they don’t give off that much light, imo. Still, enought o find your way on the dark.A much more substantial light is one that you can buy in Cuba for less than $20. It’s a fluorescent fixture with a 40 watt (could be 20, I don’t recal) tube AND a built in rechargeable battery. It easily lights up a room and runs for a couple of hours on a charge. It plugs in the wall and can be set to go on automatically if the power goes out and it makes sure it is always charged. It can also be used as a regular light, plugged into the wall. For $20, it’s a steal, imo.
