Young girls cooling off in the summer outside their home in Banao, a small agricultural town, in Sancti Spiritus province. Their mother smiled when I walked into their yard and began photographing them then went back to washing dishes in the window.

He may be 97 but he is Cuban and still a horny old bastard. Last year I took my sister to meet him. While photographing the two of them side by side, she said he was feeling her ass.

Maternity house in Vinales. Too many visit Vinales but only visit tobacco farms, caves, valleys and mogotes. They miss the best part of Vinales which is the local people.

Local who lives in the old sugar cane cutter housing in Guaro, a small town in Holguin province. He was thrilled when I brought him a print of his photo a few months later. That is not Havana Club in the bottle, it is a local brewed rum sold as draught to those who bring their own bottles.

Dancers in the parade which opens the monthly “day of culture” called “Macausan” in Cueto, Holguin. Macausa, a local resident, was the life long girlfriend of Compay Segundo, leader of the Buena Vista Social Club.

I have known Sanchez as an accomplished classic guitar player, poet, and overall great guy for a while. Here he is getting ready to go on stage for Fidel’s 90th birthday celebration.

Then one day I met him walking down the street carrying his old military uniform. He had never mentioned that he was one of the clandestinos fighting while Fidel and Raul were in Mexico buying the Granma, or that he was one of Raul’s commanders in the Second Front, or that he was one of Fidel’s commanders at Bay of Pigs, or that he was a commander in Angola. The simple medal with the number 1 on his right breast indicates his inclusion in the exclusive “First Order”, those who have fought in all of Cuba’s military conflicts.

Vera, a Santera priestess, leading the celebration of San Lazaro in Guaro, a small town in Holguin province. The celebration went from midnight to the following afternoon.

I had the honor, being a foreigner, of being the first to drink some rum, share a cigar, and dance with Vera. Fortunately I know enough about Santeria tradition to not embarrass myself although there were a few moments where others had a good laugh at my expense. I have always found Santeria to be warm and welcoming to those who show respect.

Many animals were offered to San Lazaro. Santeria is a very practical religion. Goat’s heads, skin, and feet were placed on the altar while the meat is roasted and eaten in San Lazaro’s honor.

Nice to be invited to the ceremony, Bob. I expect Vera isn’t wearing white because it would be hard to keep clean here?

Spunky: Santeria only wear white during their yabo or year of rebirth and when they are hustling tourists for tarot card readings.

I actually did not get a special invitation. I just showed up as I knew Vera and others there.
