We spent two and a half weeks in Cuba staying in Casa Particulares but thought we’d book one room in a hotel for our last night as a treat. It was a real mistake. Cuba is the most amazing country and the casa particulares we stayed in were all without exception hugely welcoming, clean and comfortable. The best thing about the hotels is the lovely buildings and any restaurant/cafes, but you can use these without being a guest so I wouldn’t recommend staying in a hotel to any traveller or tourist. The food was disappointing, the first room were were alocated had a broken bed lying half on the floor, and the reception staff were pretty unfriendly. Also, checkout was 12pm and we were told we’d be charged an extra 25 cuc to stay in our room until 4pm or 50cuc to stay until 6pm so if you’ve got an evening flight the following day you’re stuffed! We ended up going back to one of our previous casa particulares to leave our bags for the day and have a shower before our flight.
In summary, not a great choice for any holiday maker or traveller, you’re better off staying in a homestay and visiting the hotel for a coffee in the beautiful lobby.
