pricing seems high | Debbie's Caribbean Resort Reviews Forums

I think the term is "taxes & fees", represented by "taxes" for simplicity. Taxes include HST and are applied to the base fare plus to other fees and charges. Fees would include "airport improvement" fees, NavCanada fees, and probably fees imposed by the government of the country where you are landing. Then there are insurance fees, security charges, and of course "fuel surcharges". It’s a long list!

So if I book 4 days, 2 weeks or 4 weeks AI with Sunwing, HLX to VRA taxes are the same?
I am truly curious. I break it down to all in, how much per day? I don’t look at before tax prices and never considered 4 day trips. Yes, that is the way ALL the charter companies do it. When you book a vacation package, its ALL in. That’s the point of it.(you can’t normally book more than 2 weeks as an AI though)Sunwing just changed their "fees and taxes" to $ 359 to varadero. But yes, normally it does’t matter what resort, whether its 5 days or 7 days or 14 days, the "taxes" are the same with the same company.Westjet charges their own amount, but again it doesnt vary with the hotel you are staying at or usually duration. So to ME, the taxes dont matter when comparing prices..its the BASE that varies….hence why I said $25 or $35. You are bascially getting a deal obviously when most people had to pay $500-$800 for the same thing….taxes aside.

Make sense?!

I find numbers interesting so I did a quick search on Sunwing…

1.) Halifax to Hotel Oasis Islazul departing April 26 for 4 days: $655 + Taxes $325

2.) Halifax to Hotel Oasis Islazul departing April 26 for 7 days: $675 + Taxes $359

3.) Halifax to Hotel Oasis Islazul departing April 26 for 14 days: $955 + Taxes $359

The taxes certainly don’t vary much between a 4 day trip and a 14 day trip…Cheers,

Terry

This just changes in April…Was NEVER that way for the past 12 years or so I have been travelling…the taxes were the same for 2 day or 2 week packages. Check out Sunwing prices in March. It’s only in April that they go up.

Check Westjet as well as ACV, you will see the same is true. Doesnt matter if you book ocean view or suite or basic room either, taxes are the same. Has nothing to do with the resort at all. Same amount for a 1* or a 5*.

The taxes are higher in the example above because, in the last two scenarios, the return flight is after May 1st. The departure tax of 25 CUC’s is included in those two.

I wish they would just list the prices with the tax included. Depends on the tour operator it seems which tax amount they want to charge. I can’t help but feel they inflate the tax amount to make the base amount seem cheaper .. probably not but feels that way.

Especially when you see other companies offering for half the tax amount .. but then the base amount is inflated. I believe it is included in the prices when shopping for flights only .. would be nice for all inclusive trips as well. I suppose it is just laziness on my part as I can do the math. LOL

Ok..that makes sense for sure..so the taxes weren’t increased by Sunwing, its because the departure tax in included…..I like that better for sure.

That is mandatory for anyone selling to Quebec consumers. Most online travel agencies will indicate all-in pricing if you select Montreal (or Quebec City) as your departure city. Those that don’t are not respecting the provincial regulations.

the online site I use has the option for you to see prices with or without "tax" I always choose with as I like to see the total price. A few years ago we booked in April for one week in Jibacoa (villas) for $408 each (all in) for a week – we jumped on it immediately! and would do so again

Thanx monctonguy. (and cheersterry) Does make more sense now. I just remember comparing different charter airlines and package providers years ago. Base price varied a lot with different prices and different taxes, but the total package worked out to the same cost in the end for most similar options.
The taxes remain the same. The only thing the airlines have control over is the fuel surcharge. This is really not a tax this extra money goes directly into the airlines pocket. To include it or call it a tax is misleading. They make it easier to swallow by calling it a tax it is not. They may also throw in administration fees which are also not a tax.

Bottom line final price is all that matters all else is just smoke and mirrors.

It was only a matter of time. Prices to the Sunny South are starting to look much more attractive out of YYZ for April and May. It will only be a matter of days before I pull the trigger on a last minute deal :). Cuba is still on the top of my list for NOW. LOL.

I’m still on the fence. Thinking Paradisus Rio De Oro again or back to Akumal Beach Resort in Mexico which has recently been renovated to a 4+ resort. Neither is what I’d call a good price but I figure a good deal at either of these is rare. Air Transat is going to charge us $720.00 total to upgrade to Club Class this year though to Mexico. Last year it was only $600.00. After seeing the lines in the Cancun Airport, both coming and going, there’s no way I’d fly there without Club Class.

depending when you are going might be a big factor

…… I will always be an advocate for PRDO. We have had such great times there….. but this summer 2015 June 1 – end of Aug. they will have the main pool closed for renovations and will also be taking the time to renovate 100 rooms. Come Sept it will be wonderful….but with the lesser number of guests, there will be far more than normal rotating restaurant "dark nights"… and the service might slip a bit because of that. So if you do not mind a bit of inconvenience it will be like having your own semi-private country club resort.

We’re looking to go the first or second week of May so I think we’d miss all the closures.

I pulled the trigger on Sol Rio de Luna y Mares. I have had this resort on my radar for many years. I will start packing my snorkel and diving gear tomorrow.

Congrats George! When you leaving?

It seems like eons ago and we’d love to get back to this resort, but alas no decent direct flights out of YVR. Playa Esmeralda is gorgeous and imho the nicest beach in this part of Cuba.

Lucky you I guess you got some last minute deal. This time of the year is the best for last minute deals Ok September is excellent as well!

Please give a snorkel report when you return.

Thanks Cristal we will be heading out on April 14th. If it were up to me I would have waited to book for another week but my wife has already booked the time off work and we have already missed out on a great deal that sold out before a friend that was going to travel with us could make up his mind. (2 days ago the Blau Costa Verde Plus , Nolitours ,sold out with in an hour of posting their lowest price that I have seen all spring) I didn’t even bother asking/telling him about this one. Nice friend eh? He can look for his own vacation. LMAO! Big John, I have snorkelled at the Blau Costa Verde and Memories Holguin (former RPT) in this region and enjoyed them both. The staff at Memories told me that the snorkelling is even better at Playa Esmeralda. We were going to Hobie Cat it over to Esmeralda the day before we left last November but the weather didn’t cooperate. I am really looking forward to it. I will most certainly report back.

Admin, I think we did OK for this April. I think I could have done a little better if we waited absolute last minute but because my wife booked the time off already and she has a specific style of resort in mind we didn’t want to miss out. IMHO I think September historically has way better last minute deal choices. You can always get a bargain basement price on a 3 star or lower if you aren’t too fussy. I think I will save September for my "office conference" ..cough, cough with the guys. LOL.

Well I guess we lucked out. Our package has sold out. Our bags are packed!
