Sounds like a great trip. There’s a good chance our Admin will see this before he leaves for Baracoa for Christmas with family. If not, he will be back well before you leave and have first-hand info about your route questions.

Hi @chrishoog welcome to Debbie’s.
Unfortunately unless they fix bridge you will not be able to go Holguin Baracoa but you can go Holguin -Santiago de Cuba – Baracoa with taxi as well. It will cost a few CUC more but road is nicer. I will be able to let you know if they fix bridge so that you can go Holguin – Baracoa but as I know bridge is not fixed yet. I will definitely hook up on Wi-Fi while in Baracoa and post situation. Regarding staying in casas and enjoying town I heard that many things are back to normal. Is this your first time visiting Cuba?

Yes, this will be our first time! Thank you so much for your offer to help. We have two weeks to spend in Cuba. With the uncertainty of travel, I think taking the full two weeks toward the west side will be a safer bet. I’d be sad to miss the unique culture and food of Baracoa but I’m sure we’ll have an amazing time nonetheless. What do you think?

If it is your first time in Cuba I am sure you have many areas to explore. If you decide to go to visit Baracoa (I can let you know how its there once I see) you should go and stop by in Santiago De Cuba as it’s the second biggest city in Cuba with lots of to see and than you can continue your trip to Guantanamo and Baracoa. Now situation in Baracoa is pretty much back to normal. I can see many tourists and casas particular have guests. Streets are cleaned and many roofs fixed. If anyone wants to visit Baracoa it’s fine to come. One thing is that buying vegetables and fruits can be challenging as many crops and trees demaged by hurricane. Bridge is not fixed yet so the best way is to come over Santiago Guantanamo Baracoa. Hope it helps for anyone who is interested to visit Baracoa soon. Weather is nice with plus 30 c and sometimes short showers. Otherwise fun to be here. Cheers

@chrishoog just update that I went Baracoa – Holguin over Toa river. They built road / help bridge so Baracoa is accessible from Holguin through this road:

@mark_s just update for you that Alejandro de Humboldt National Park and beaches are accessible and everything is pretty much sorted out and working so if you wish to visit park or beaches you will be able to do so! Let me know if you have any more questions!

Thanks so much for the update on the Toa bridge. I am really pleased to see the Moa – Baracoa route passable again as I live part time east of the Barajagua / Caballeria turnoff on the route from Holguin to Santiago. Having this bridge passable again means I have a straight shot to Baracoa without having to double back to go through Santiago.

@BobMichaels Yes I know I pass by many times Barajagua / Caballeria area on my way to Baracoa. Did not have a chance to stop by and explore area more. Yes Toa river is passable again but new bridge will be built by Venezuelan company. Here are some photos so you can see how it looks right now:

Im very pleased to see the route is reopened between holguin and baracoa. We are so looking forward to our visit here in 4 weeks time with our toddler. We are coming in from santiago but hoping to leave via moa back to holguin and stay for 5 nights. We were also hoping to visit the park,toa river and playa maguana. So to know the route is open and the local people are recovering after the hurricane is very pleasing. See you soon baracoa!!

We have not travelled to this area before but are looking forward to it. We have booked a casa and also will visit the yumuri area too.

Actually that building is very old and empty because it was falling apart before hurricane. Not sure if they want to renovate and make it nice again as there is some material around.
