Just received this:URGENT ADVISORY…Brisas Los Galeones / Sunwing Vacations We have received the following advisory from Sunwing Vacations concerning your upcoming trip to Brisas Los Galeones resort / Santiago De Cuba.Due to low occupancy, the Los Galeones will be closed until Dec.15/09. Sunwing Vacations are offering to re-locate guests to the Brisas Sierra Mar as a replacement.

If this is not satisfactory then you are intitled to a full refund of all monies paid.

We haven’t been notifed yet but I noticed Los Galeones was removed for the last two weeks.We booked Aug. 27 for Dec. 3. This also happened to us this past April12. They say they don’t have sufficent bookings but I think they simply want to run one resort . This past April they had the price of Los Galeones higher than Sierra Mar and then finally took it off the booking list altogether. They offered us Sierra Mar which we went to and enjoyed but LosGaleones is our favorite place in Cuba . It is very disappointing if this is just a marketing scheme from the get go. Los Galeones has a dedicated and loyal cliental and these resorts aren’t the same .

	ahh….but dearly loved by some! We accepted the upgrade to sierra mars and are going in Dec. but we are rethinking the wisdom of booking in advance for los Galeones as this is the second time this has happened and no we donot consider it an upgrade.

I don’t believe the "due to low occupancy" excuse for a minute. I was there two years ago after the flooding washed out the roads…..there were exactly 2 other guests when I checked in, and they hadn’t closed the place. It is such a small occupancy hotel I don’t believe they can’t fill it. And why indeed is it priced higher than Sierra Mar? I would go back in a heartbeat for a decent price with no single supplement. Definitely a different clientele from Sierra Mar. I really have no wish to stay there and wouldn’t consider it a satisfactory "upgrade"!

	You’re right eee. I don’t think paying more for Los G and then being moved to BSM is an ‘upgrade’. Surveys show those who stay at BSM gain and additional 5lbs / week stay compared to LosG. It’s gotta be all those stairs!

I had probably the best meals I’ve ever enjoyed in Cuba at Los Galeones. Don’t know if it was the very low occupancy or if that is the norm, but the chefs were trying to outdo themselves after I told them I was vegetarian. Totally gourmet, right down to the presentation! And no, I didn’t gain weight. Something about those stairs.

(Oh, and BTW. it’s "eeee", "four e’s", "for ease". "eee" doesn’t make any sense!)

This fall, Sunwing was pricing LG higher than last year, and charging a single supplement for pre-Christmas bookings that were not being charged in previous years.I received an email from the sales manager of BSM/LG who said LG was reopening Dec 15.I wonder if it really was closed or if Sunwing just wanted to fill BSM. Last year in December, LG was full the week I was there before Christmas. If it wasn’t full this year it was because of higher prices.

By the way, I concur with eeeefarm about the food at LG.

I don’t think this is sunwing. I think it is BSM , Sunwing is getting it’s sale whether I stay at LG or BSM they have made their sale. BSM now only has to run one resort, hence more efficient but for us we have already booked connecting flights to To. and work schedules so we would incurr losses to not accept the "upgrade " but the old saying fool me once ……(in this case twice

) So in future we will not book LG so far in advance but still our favourite place in Cuba. I guess time to find another place for the shoulder seasons, our time of travel. Steps have their advantage

I’ve been to Los Gaelones many times and absolutely love it — the staff, peace and quiet, "no-kids" policy are all great. I would never accept a transfer to BSM.
Having said all that, I am looking for a change next year. I was wondering if anyone had ever found a place similar in scale and atmosphere to Los Galeones somewhere else in Cuba. I’ve never heard of one from friends and travel agents, but I thought someone on this forum might have.
